County Spotting or County Spotting

Summits on the Air (SOTA)

WWFF (KFF, Parks, etc.)

I would like to encourage you to get on the air from a portable or mobile location with one of the many on-the-air programs such as  SOTA, WWFF, County Hunters, Light Houses, U.S. Islands, IOTA, COTA, OSCAR, etc. One could even operate a special event station at an event such as a festival. There are many opportunties to operate portable as an indivdual, with friends, or with a club. There are also many opportunites to hunt or chase in the on-the-air programs. There are many DX stations operating portable in several of the on-the-air programs.

Our Portable Communications Equipment for SOTA:

We use the PAR EndFedZ EF-MTR antenna-it is a 40M/30M/20M tri-band QRP antenna rated up to 25W. It is popular with SOTA activators.

Yaesu FT-817 or FT-817ND

Elecraft KX2 and KX3 is popular with other SOTA activators.

We also use a Jackite Pole with a 9:1 unun, 31 ft. vertical wire, and a 50 ft. counterpoise wire. Sometimes we use two counterpoise wires.

Aluminum angle rod or tripod to secure the Jackite Pole. We also have a 100 watt portable station for shorter hikes and other portable and mobile operations.

Join and/or listen to one of the Bible study groups:

3.912 LSB check-ins start at 5:00 A.M. Central (1000 UTC); Bible study starts at 5:30 A.M. Central (1130 UTC) daily. The Sunrise Bible Study Group started in 1964. Check-in reading or listening. Each station reads one verse. Comments are taken after all stations have finisihed reading Bible verses. Easter morning (03/27/16) we read Mark 15 and 16. Mark chapter 16 verses 1 through 8 discusses the resurrection. Mark 16:6 NIV “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. Comments: He has risen; This simply stated fact is the foundation of the Christian faith.

14.322.5 USB 2:00 PM Central (1900 UTC). Check-ins start 1850-1900 UTC. Bible study starts around 2:15 PM Central/1915 UTC. Check-in reading or listening. Each reading station reads one verse at a time. The net normally goes around twice allowing each station to read a total of two verses. Many stations use Remote Hams to access the net. You may not hear many of the stations in the net on 14.322.5 due to propagation.

I currently only use eQSL for portable operations (SOTA, WWFF, etc.). I have stopped using eQSL for operations from Jefferson County, AL due to the complications of setting up a different location and date range for each operation in eQSL due to our portable operations from many different locations.

Paper QSL Cards

If you would like a paper QSL card, please send a #10 SASE (4.13in. x 9.5in/ 10.5 cm x 24.1 cm). We are currently working to process hundreds of QSL cards from 2016 for NPOTA, WWFF, and SOTA contacts. We hope to have all cards processed by the end of January 2018.

County Confirmations

In 2016 and 2017 we operated from about 100 counties in 13 states. We always know what county we are operating from on a summit or in a park. Any easy way to confirm counties is to send a mobile response car (MRC) or QSL card along with a SASE. A MRC allows one to confrim many counties on one card or one print out. MARAC Logger easily prints a MRC. If you have been active as a chaser or hunter in one of the many on-the-air programs you may have already worked 500 or more counties to earn county hunter awards.

If you need a QSL card or confirmation for counties from 1995 through 1998 please send a card or MRC or email me at the address listed on QRZ. From 1995 through 1998 I operated fom many counties in about 38 states.
