Originally licensed in 1965 with the Novice call of WN9PYA.  Later call signs were WA9PYA (General/Advanced), WB6RWR (Advanced/Extra) and, since 1979, AK3Y (Extra).  Also operated as FØTD in the late 60's while overseas as a foreign exchange student in France.

I'm a retired electrical engineer (B.S.E.E. Illinois Institute of Technology, S.M.E.E. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ph.D. Stanford University) and ran my own business - Multispectral Solutions, Inc. (MSSI) - for 25 years prior to retirement in 2008. Most of my work at MSSI was with ultra wideband (UWB) microwave communications, radar and tracking systems operating in the 3 to 10 GHz range. Previously, I worked at Raytheon Company (Communications Systems Laboratory, Sudbury, MA), Carnegie-Mellon University (EE Department, Pittsburgh, PA) and Litton Amecom (Advanced Technology, College Park, MD). I was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2007 for contributions to short pulse electromagnetics as applied to ultra wideband systems.

My favorite amateur bands are 40, 20 and 10 meters, and my favorite modes of operation are SSB (rag chewing) and the weak signal digital modes (JT65, JT9 and FT8).

Equipment currently consists of an Icom IC-7600 transceiver, Heil Pro 7 headset, ACOM 1000 amplifier, Palstar HF-Auto tuner and two wire antennas: (1) a 130 foot End Fed Half Wave for 80 through 10 meters, and (2) a 250 foot End Fed Half Wave for 160 through 40 meters.  Both antennas were manufactured by myantennas.com.

I QSL via eQSL.cc and the ARRL's LoTW.  I also will send direct if I receive a card in the mail (return postage welcome but not critical).  I do not use the Bureau.

My other hobbies include woodworking (primarily marquetry - see my page on the American Marquetry Society website where I am currently the AMS webmaster) and travel photography.
