G4EQZ BIO - As of August 2013

I am married, 65 years young (in 2013), alive at the time of writing this blushstill working full time, heavy - (22 stone, 300 lbs, 140 Kilos) and approximately 9 inches too short for my weight. I have a brain the size of a small planet, two kids, 4 Grand kids and 3 dogs complete the household.

Main station is a Kenwood TS990S with ACOM 1000 Amplifier and MFJ Balanced tuner. This I automated by replacing the knobs with stepper motors and adding arduino to control the autotune etc. Microphone is MXL Capacitive type. Also have FLEX 5000A, TS990 and ICOM 706IIG.

The TS990S bandscope is the best built into a rig right now and the only one with a waterfall but still isn't brilliant so I use a seperate SDR receiver ( Elad FDM-S1) connected to the 990 RX out via splitter and synched to HDSDR software using OmniRig. This means I can change frequency, mode etc either on the PC or Radio and use click and pounce on the PC Waterfall display. Much more sensitive and much more accurate than 990 touch screen.

Operation is mostly on the top band "Radio 1933" net (1.933 MHz) http://radio1933.net/ late evenings typically 10:30PM till the small hours and occasional the following morning. Operation is VOX or PTT - no overs !!!. Excessive alcohol consumption and controversial discussions coupled with good humored abuse (sometimes) are the order of the day - or rather night! I no longer have any great interest in X-raying Dogs though don't mind picking up an occasional long distance contact if I dont have to work for it.

Above: Wider view of the shack. It's also my place of work. I am a software / systems developer. From my chair I can quickly swivel back and forth between work and play. See how many monitors you can spot - one is switched off :)

My current HF Antenna shown above. Location is approx 700ft ASL but hilltop visibility, very low roof bungalows + lack of tall trees means antenna isnt very high. Also use the excellent Wellbrook loop as a receive anntena which can perform amazingly when the main antenna is picking up too much local QRN. Best £200 I ever spent on radio.

Below: you can see the automated MFJ Balanced tuner. Yes the stepper motors are 4 times bigger than they need to be but what does a lot does a little with ease and I didnt know what size would have sufficient torque so opted for total overkill.
