HI everyone. I've been licensed since 1982. I was a wireless operator in the Royal Air Force. In 1956 I did my training at RAF Compton Bassett in Wiltshire. Got posted a few times , RAF Wellesbourne Mountford, RAF West Freugh, Cairn Ryan Military Port, the island of St.Kilda, Outer Hebrides. Used Collins TCS 12 on the island which was in the only building still with a roof as the island was cleared of inhabitants in about 1935. Our sleeping and eating was in tents! Sailed to the island on Tank Landing Ship from Cairn Ryan. I also operated from a signals lorry parked right next to the lighthouse at Cairn Ryan before they decided I should rough it for while on St Kilda.
At RAF Aldergrove in Northern Ireland, which was my home station. I was on a meteorology net called BISMUTH using HRO receivers to work aircraft flying out over the Atlantic gathering weather info. Did a couple of stints at fire training camps at Chorley and Moreton in the Marsh.
Station comprises Icom 7300 and Yaesu FT450D
Antennas...Inverted V on gable end of bungalow so not very high!
I can still manage on the key but pretty slow these days. I had to be able to work at 25 wpm using a big brass key but a bit younger in those days!
