GB0FHD is a special event callsign used for a DX-pedition by the South Dorset Radio Society to Flat Holm island situated in the Bristol Channel between Cardiff in South Wales and Weston Super Mare in Somerset, England. Flat Holm is a sister island to nearby Steep Holm. Both islands were fortified in Victorian times and in both World Wars to protect the approaches to major Bristol Channel ports such as Bristol and Cardiff docks. Flat Holm was also the historic site of Guigliemo Marconi's very first over water transmission from Lavernock point in South Wales in 1897. Today the island is a nature sanctuary and provides basic accommodation for visitors in the Island's Farmhouse. The SDRS DX pedition will use the old Victorian barracks as a QTH and will operate three stations to include CW, SSB and Datamodes operating simultaneously on bands from 80m to 10m as conditions allow. Rigs will include an iCom 725 and 7300, an ft991, and an ft817. Antennas will include SOTA Beam switchable dipoles in inverted V configuration, and a 10m vertical over an existing groundplane. In 2017 the stations will be active on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of September. The island is IOTA listed as EU124, and occupies the rare "Worked All Britain" square ST26.
