The Bog is the remains of an abandoned mining village located to the west of Stiperstones, a hill and National Nature Reserve in the south west of the county of Shropshire.

Lead mining started here in the 1730s and mining lasted here for almost 200 years! The settlement grew as miners moved to work in the rapidly expanding mine. In 1793 there were around 100 miners employed at The Bog. By the mid 1800s The Bog had become a thriving, bustling village with rows of cottages, mine buildings and offices, a pub and a school.

Boom & bust

Although the veins were rich in lead ore, mining was not continuous; leases changed hands frequently and companies went bankrupt. Lead mining stopped at The Bog in the 1880s, but the mines were re-opened in the early 1900s to extract barytes, a mineral found with the lead ore. German prisoners of war constructed an overhead aerial ropeway to carry the barites nearby villages for processing. It was used in paint, paper, medicines and the chemical industry. However, mining for barytes at The Bog soon became uneconomic and production finally ceased in 1922.
