I received my novice license WN0BAF at the age of 14 in December of 1961 and upgraded to general class WA0BAF in June of 1963. Eventually I upgraded to the advanced class license. In November of 2013, I obtained the Vanity call sign of K0VVV which belonged to Bob Thomson. Bob and I were in the high school radio club in 1963. I operate mainly CW on 20 meters.
In 1968 and 1969 I served with the 101st Airborne as an Army Mars operator in Vietnam with the station call of AB8AAE. Our original station in 1968 was in a tent and consisted of a KWM-2A, 30l-1 and Henry 4K amplifier. The antenna was a a multi- band quad. (see Photos below) In 1969 we moved into a "hooch" and ran two stations . The antennas were a log periodic and a dipole. In 1977 I obtained a First Class Radio Telephone license. I did some fast scan TV on 420mhz before I became inactive in the late 80?s. I have recently started putting a station together.
My working career consisted of being a central office installer with Western Electric. I worked mainly in AT&T toll facilities. Most of my work was with Microwave main and repeater stations and all the peripheral equipment that was associated with it.
Western Electric Installation became AT&T installation at divesture and in 1996 it became Lucent Technologies. I retired in 2002 with 36 years from Lucent.
