I first became interested in radio as a kid when I began listening to police and fire calls.  It didn't take long for me to get my first scanner and then a CB and start learning all about radio.  I can remember riding around on my bike listening on my scanner.  I had a few 10-meter repeater frequencies programmed in and was shocked to hear FM repeaters from 3,000 miles away on my handheld scanner.  The skip was really good back in those days.  I dreamed of getting my ham radio license and finally did after graduating from high school.  At the time, I passed both my Technician and General tests and purchased several radios at a hamfest.  Shortly afterwards, I moved out to Florida and then to Oklahoma City for about six years.  Then I moved back to Hagerstown, Maryland, married my wife and purchased a home.  For the last few years, most of my radio hobby has been limited to scanning and learning about trunked systems, however I felt like I was missing out on the fun adventures of ham radio.  I studied and passed the Extra test and then got a Yaesu FT-817ND.  I currently have it connected to an LDG Z-817 tuner into an inverted off-center fed dipole up about 30 feet.  I have a second tuner that will get me onto 80 meters but rarely use it so far.  I also use a Realistic DSP that really helps pull out the CW but should have a 300 Hz filter soon.  I'm also getting ready to become active digitally again with the Signalink USB.  I've been getting my code speed up and can reliably receive at about 13 wpm without too much trouble.  I love the thrill of working stations running 100 watts or even higher and then sending back that I'm only running 5 watts and still getting my signal out there.  It sure is great to be a ham operator!
