I was first licensed in 1949 at the age of 15. A quick effort with a slide rule puts me at age 78. I have lived in Nevada for about 50 years which probably earns the title of "settler" or something close to that.

My main interst the last 11 years is the digital soundcard modes. I am amazed at the speed of development. The first PSK31 software was a joy to see and use, but soon fell into the primitive category. Now, I use Fldigi which seems light years ahead of its time. Plus, with a few keystrokes, I can exchange digital confirmation as well as maintain an in-house log automatically.

The most amazing part to me? I consider ham radio as my choice of "social network", and I am sure if anyone reading this thinks about it just for a few moments, you will agree. Who needs Facebook when you have a couple million ham friends?

OK -- the setup is a IC756PRO feeding a home-grown 30 foot vertical, a home-assembled quad core tower with Linux Ubuntu 10.04 OS. Not a whole lot of additional equipment to brag about except peripherals to make it play. At my age, I tired of repairing wind damaged antennas and went simple. Just play the radio. Life is good.

Thanks for checking in -- See you on the air.
