Hello Fellow Amateurs,

My name is David (Dave) and I've been a ham since September 20, 1996; upgraded to extra class on July 31, 2001. My primary operating mode is CW, but I am also fairly active on digital and SSB HF.  I have two radios, an ICOM IC-746 and a Yaesu FT-897D, connected to either a W5GI Mystery Antenna (multiband dipole 80m-6m) or a Mosley 5 element beam (TA-34-M, WARC); both up 50 feet. When operating CW, I use either the Bencher RJ-1 straight key or Bencher Hex paddle connected to a K1EL WinKeyer. I can copy about 12 to 15 WPM comfortably when the bands are good. Also enjoy serving as a VE (since 2010), chasing DX, paper chasing, and contesting.

I'm active in both the Goshen Amateur Radio Club and the Mennonite Amateur Radio Network (MARN).  MARN has a Tuesday and Sunday afternoon net called the "Mennonet".  You can find more information on our facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/MennoniteAmateurRadioNetwork.  Just for the connection, I attended Goshen College in the early 1990's.

Outside of amateur radio, I serve our community as a member of the Millersburg-Clinton Fire Territory (a volunteer fire department based out of Millersburg, IN) since July 2002. I have dual roles as both a firefighter and EMT-Basic; I was department secretary for 4 years, EMS Lieutenant 7 years, and now EMS Captain for a year. Be not surprised if I have to cut a conversation short, we are on call all the time.

A special thank you to Jim Locke (W3NRJ; ex:W6NRJ) for introducing me to the hobby back in 1984 and to James Doyle (W3CKU) for making my first morse code tape.  Also to David Schaefer (NR9M-SK) for encouraging me to study for my technician ticket. Lastly to Brent Zook (N9HZ-SK) for helping me develop and improve my CW skills. It's guys like yourselves that motivate me to spend time with the younger generation, to hopefully produce some future radio operators. Thanks.

As of 6/6/2014 we started the Long Family DX Contest Group of Goshen, IN, callsign AA9BL.  It consists of my 13-year-old son, Jenson KC9UMP, who holds a general class license, my wife, Charlotte KB9OPS, (a technician), a brother, Derek KG4INE, (a technicain), and a daughter, Allison (a future ham).  We hope to use this club call not only for contesting, but to introduce friends to the exciting hobby of amateur radio.

4/30/15 the special event callsign for the 48th Annual Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale was approved for September 20 (0000Z) - 27 (2359Z).  Visit the QRZ page for N9M and look for us next Septmeber.  N9M has been approved for the 2017 Relief Sale, more details to follow...

4/19/16 Vanity callsign AA9DL approved by the FCC.

8/4/16  My son Jenson (KC9UMP) and I won the ARRL November Sweepstakes Central Division Phone Contest:  Multi-Op Low Power.

QSL information:  Direct (must include a SASE, No Bureau), eQSL, QRZ.com, and LoTW.

 73,

Dave Long - AA9DL (Previous call KB9MLE)
