Hello,

Thanks for looking me up. Name is Shawn here in Lake City, Minnesota USA. Licensed Tech in 2016 and I just upgraded to General 19-NOV-2016. Probably catch me on digital mostly or see my call on the pskreporter map in southeastern Minnesota :-).

I did alot of SWL over the years and decoding once the RTL-SDR came on the market but finally got into transmitting and decided to learn the rules of the highway. I guess I also got somewhat comfortable with idea of spending some time and money on this end of it. For the sake of being cheap I prefer older equipment that I can work on and antennas that I can build. I either make what I have, purchase old and or in need of repair.

Using a linux/windows machine hooked up via signalink usb to a ICOM IC-745 (oldie but seems to work good, easy to use for starting out here). End Fed antenna (homebrew) 124' about 35 feet up. I have had a Rohn 30ft tower up since 2012 for Television which eventually got a QHA homebrew antenna on it for NOAA APT through an RTL-SDR. Used to use a PA0RDT active mini whip antenna (homebrew) through the sdr before the ham license came along and the rest of the rig. The AT-100 autotuner seems to work good with the 745 and end fed wire has good swr on most the HF except 160m.

I also have a VHF/UHF antenna up for 2m, 70cm but all I have right now is an HT, will find a radio sometime for it.

I just added a Ten-Tec 1208 6 meter transverter. The 745 can go to 5 watts or less for input (which I only seen 10 watts in the manual). Either way I modified the 1208 to handle up to 10 watts but will not be necessary, just gave it some cushion. The output is 9.5 watts but faded down from heat towards the end of a JT65 transmission so I tested it with a cooling fan and now it holds. So we will see how it goes for now. *Update* on the 1208 made a rookie mistake got confused on the wattmeter....needless to say I had to replace a transistor :-). Not a big deal the unit seems to work better after replacing a final, some tired resistors and thermal compound. Now only needs 2.5 watts to get full outpout. I built a 6m squalo antenna for it at this time.

I also added a fan to the 745 was noticing some drifting and that was cured so far with extra cooling. The 745 has a 100% duty cycle and internal fan but turns on after a certain temp threshold which seems to be too late for some of the tighter digital modes.

Will have to add some pics of the setup and the lake soon.

I was in the US Air Force as an AGE(Aerospace Ground Equipment) troop. I now work for the US Army Corps of Engineers (electrical/mechanical trades).

I am also a licensed A2 Operating Engineer (high pressure steam with turbine) and I have my FCC GROL with radar endorsment, CETa certified electronics technician.

For hobbies I like working here in the shop/shack on tube type equipment and radios, Raspberry PI projects(MAME Arcade, media center), Arduino, repairing guitar pedals, restoring tube radios, test equipment, playing guitar and chasing the kid :-).

Anyway, I got alot to learn so throw me a bone, I will take any tips and tricks along the way that I can get.

Not originally from MN but the tri-state of OH,WV,KY if I see you are from there I will probably mention so :-).

Send me a short message at KE0KEO@winlink.org....I have Winlink Express all setup, will check it at least every couple of weeks through winmor.

8/2017 Working on an SDR dedicated to another end fed homebuilt 9:1 unun at this time. Using RTL-TCP and a Raspberry Pi as a server or WSPR transceiver depending on the line command. Nice I can check out any band anywhere in the house through the network or I can work WSPR.
