Thanks for looking me up. Name is Shawn here in Lake City, Minnesota USA. Licensed Tech in 2016 and I just upgraded to General 19-NOV-2016. Probably catch me on digital mostly or see my call on the wsprnet map or pskreporter map :-).
I am not really knew to radio but finally got into transmitting and decided to learn the rules of the highway. I guess I also got somewhat comfortable with idea of spending some time and money on this end of it. For the sake of being cheap I prefer older equipment that I can work on and antennas that I can build. I either make what I have, purchase old and cheap or in need of repair.
Using a linux/windows machine hooked up via signalink usb to a ICOM IC-745 (oldie but seems to work good, easy to use for starting out here). End Fed antenna inverted L 124' about 35 feet up. I have had a Rohn 30ft tower up since 2012 for Television which eventually got a QHA homebrew antenna on it for NOAA APT through an RTL-SDR. Used to use a PA0RDT active mini whip antenna (home built) through the sdr before the ham license came along and the rest of the rig. The AT-100 autotuner seems to work good with the 745 and end fed wire has good swr on most the HF except 160m (will investigate that later).
I also have a VHF/UHF antenna up for 2 meter but all I have right now is an HT, will find a radio sometime this winter for that.
Will have to add some pics of the setup and the lake soon.
I was in the US Air Force as an AGE(Aerospace Ground Equipment) troop. I now work for the US Army Corps of Engineers (electrical/mechanical trades).
I am also a licensed A2 Operating Engineer (high pressure steam with turbine) and I have my FCC GROL with radar endorsment.
For hobbies I like working here in the shop/shack on tube type equipment and radios, Raspberry PI projects(MAME Arcade, media center), Arduino, repairing guitar pedals, restoring tube radios, test equipment. Playing guitar and chasing the kid :-).
Anyway, I got alot to learn or get good at so throw me a bone. I will take any tips and tricks along the way that I can get.
