Born and raised in Sullivan, MO.  Graduated from HS there in 1970.  Attended college at Southwest Baptist University from 1970-72 and 1976-78 graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in Church Music.  Spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy (1972-76) most of which was on Guam.  One year was onboard the USS Fortify (MSO-446) homeported in Agana, Guam and then two years with VQ-1 at the NAS, Agana, Guam.  It was during my time on Guam that I enjoyed my first experience operating HF with my shipmate, Bill--KI7F, working the Navy's Special Services Ham Station, KG6AKR, The Voice of Apra Harbor!!!  This station had a complete Collins S-Line with full legal limit linear and TH6DX beam at 60'.  Participated in Operation EndSweep in Haiphong Harbor, North Vietnam circa 1973.  After graduating from college I moved to Dallas, TX where I enrolled at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Completing only a year of seminary training I subsequently enrolled at the University of Texas, Arlington in the Master of Industrial Engineering Program.  Shortly after moving to Texas I passed my ham radio Novice exam in February, 1982 receiving the call KA5ONT and then the General exam in October, 1982 receiving the call N5FNW.  Two years later I passed the Advanced exam receiving the call KF5BJ.  I moved to Denver, CO in 1986 and requested a Zone "0" call receiving KE0KZ which I have had to this date.

I am now retired from the IT industry/Industrial Engineering and enjoying this stage of my life.  Between grandkids, golf, community events, church life, fishing, traveling to the Dominican Republic, and spending time at Big Cedar Lodge on Table Rock Lake near Branson, MO,  I am experimenting with several different wire antennas and learning the digital modes.

Currently operating a Kenwood TS-2000 as my main rig and a TS-850S/AT on digital modes.  I've also added a Swan 700CX & 500CX to run higher power without an amp.  I have just added my dream amp, Kenwood TL-922a.  Also on my desk is the new SDRPlay Receiver utilizing HDSDR software and an inverted "V" antenna in my attic.  As you can see in the center monitor display, I can monitor the current activity on any band from 100 KHz thru 2 GHz at a glance.  Antennas include a MFJ-2990 43' self supporting, all-band vertical, an end fed HF 10-40 m dipole at 30 feet, a double bazooka for 10-20 (including the WARC bands) in the attic and a simple inverted "V" dipole in the attic for my SDR receiver.  Restrictions in my housing area prevent installing an outside antenna.  Any suggestions on improving my antenna situation are much appreciated.  I do have significant space in my attic to place something there.  I would like to put up something to provide me with horizontal transmit/receive ability.

Most recent additions to my station are a vintage Swan 700CX with matching power supply and a Swan 500CX.  I've installed all new drivers and finals on the 700CX and love bringing it online to work stations who have never heard this radio before.  My first introduction to ham radio by my mother's cousin was his Swan 350 transceiver back in the 60's.

Other equipment include Kenwood TM-721a Dual Bander, Baofeng UV-5RE Plus & BF-F9+ V2 Dual Band HTs, MFJ-993 Auto Antenna Tuner, MFJ-1275 Digital Sound Card Interface for PBSK-31 & JT-65A, Diamond Antenna SX-600 SWR/Power Meter and Uniden Bearcat BC8500XLT Scanner.

Have been awarded the ARRL DXCC for phone (currently have 136 confirmed countries).  Working on the ARRL WAS for phone.  You can generally find me working 10-40 meter phone or digital on 15/20/40 meters in PSK-31/JT-65A modes.

Missouri State Representative Bryan Spencer (District 63) will be pre-filing Round 2 of our Missouri Amateur Radio Parity Act bill in the Missouri House in early December, 2016.  We have created a Facebook Page so that we can communicate the progress of this legislation and inform all Missouri hams of the needs we have as we move forward.  A link to this page is provided below.  We ask "ALL" licensed Missouri hams and anyone involved in emergency communications agencies partnering with amateur radio to join this group.

If you would like to read a diary of the legislative process last year, it will be attached as a file in the above Facebook group.

UPDATE (12/5/2016):  Rep. Bryan Spencer has pre-filed a bill, our 2nd attempt, Missouri Amateur Radio Parity Act, to seek relief from Homeowner Associations (HOAs) with respect to outside antennas and their supporting structures.  The Bill has been given the identification of House Bill 136.  When the new Missouri legislative session (99th) begins in early January the Bill will be assigned to a committee for its first hearing.  Please take the time to join our Facebook page, Missouri Amateur Radio Parity Act, and stay connected for future updates and to engage in this effort.

UDPATE (12/15/2016):  Interview with Christian Cudnik, KØSTH, of 100 Watts and a Wire, about the Missouri Amateur Radio Parity Act (MARPA).  Click on the link below and listen to the podcast.  Please share this with your ham friends, family, friends and neighbors, too.

UPDATE (12/23/2016):  Amateur Radio Newsline Podcast, Interview with Paul Braun, WD9GCO

UPDATE (1/10/2017):  House Bill 136 (Missouri Amateur Radio Parity Act, MARPA) has had its first and second reading in the opening sessions of the House of Representatives on January 4th & 5th.  On Wednesday, January 10th, the Bill was referred to the Special Committee on Government Oversight for its initial hearing and committee deliberation.  This committee is chaired by Rep. Rick Brattin (District 55).  Rep. Brattin was a co-sponsor of our previous Bill, HB1951.  With eleven of the thirteen committee members from districts within the three largest population areas of the state, St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield, we should have significant numbers of hams actively contacting their representatives soliciting support for this legislation.  Now is the time to begin flooding their offices with emails, phone calls and other methods of contact.  We now await the committee's calendaring a hearing date.

UPDATE (1/11/2017):  First hearing for House Bill 136 has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 24th at noon in Hearing Room 7 at the State Capitol Bldg in Jefferson City.  This hearing is critical and we need to have a good showing of hams present in the hearing to demonstrate support to the committee members.  In preparation for this hearing we ask all Missouri hams to contact each member of the committee by phone and email to ask them to support this Bill.  Contact information on the committee can be found on our website at www.marpa.us.

UPDATE (2/14/2017):  House Bill 136 as amended and passed by the Special Committee on Government Oversight and referred to the Rules--Administrative Oversight Committee.  The members of the committee can be viewed by clicking on the following link.  http://house.mo.gov/committeeindividual.aspx?com=1443&year=2017&code=R. The Chairman of the committee is Rep. Jay Barnes, District 60, and the Vice Chairman is Rep. Chrissy Sommer, District 106. Rep. Sommer is one of our co-sponsors. Rep. John Wiemann, District 103, is also on the committee and one of our co-sponsors as well. Let these committee members know that we want their support for this bill and ask them to vote YES to move the bill to the full House floor for debate and Perfection Vote as soon as possible.
