Nick Newsom

  • First active in 1993.  Spent 2 years helping with a 440 repeater on top of Palos Verdes.
  • Went to the TRW swapmeet in Torrance, CA. every month.   (So Awesome)...
  • Was a huge fan of Packet Radio which was my way of e-mailing and getting on-line before "the web"
  • Started working more and left the hobby in 1995.
  • In 2015 my dad gave me a Baofeng HT.  It wasn't much but it got me interested again.
  • I visited HRO and learned about D-Star.  Became very active.
  • And now here I am... Updating my QRZ page and playing with all sorts of things (below)...

Where I - RX/TX

Home QTH (Trabuco Canyon, CA)

Current Projects

1)  Trying all the digital modes...

  • Dstar - Using
  • IRLP - Using
  • EchoLink - Using
  • Broadband Hamnet & AREDN - Using
  • DMR - Sometime soon
  • AllStar - Sometime soon
  • C4FM - Looking at the FTM-400XD

2)  Field Day Go Box

  • I think a lot of hams over do it in this area but I like to call mine a "field box".  See my profile pic.  I have a iPortable2 with a IC-7300.   I also have a power supply and sealed battery wired up so I can quickly deploy, run of AC, and when that fails everything still works.

3)  QRP / SOTA

  • I just sold my KX3 and plan on getting a KX2 for travel.

4)  Software Defined Radio

  • I have a SDR-Play which I sometimes break out to listen to interesting things (ADS-B, etc).

5) HF

  • JT9/JT65 is interesting.

6) Kids

  • I have kids and they seem to like radios.
  • Would be great to do a contact with the ISS.

7) Repeaters

  • I built & maintain a local GMRS repeater for our community.
  • I'm interested in linking more of our local GMRS repeaters together possibly through AllStar or Wires-X.

D-Star Images & Hotspots

  • G4KLX & MMDVM - If you know linux and want to build a D-Star hotspot from scratch.
  • W6KD D-Star Commander - If you have a Raspberry Pi and a DVMega/DVAP this is a great turn-key image.  Created by Bob W6KD.
  • D-Spot 2.0 - Want a turnkey box that does everything?   This is a very reliable piece of hardware that has MMDVM.  Supports DMR, D-Star, Fusion, and more.  Great solution for mobile.   Has custom scripts that make the unit very reliable when using an iPhone, Android, etc.
  • DV4Mini - Nice little USB stick that does all the digital modes.  I use this connected to a Pipo X8 Windows 10 PC.   Allows me to have touchscreen access to all the digital nodes.
  • Hardened Power DHAP -  Hotspot package.   Has buck concerter, battery, etc.   Pairs nicely with D-Star Commander.

D-Star Links

Other Stuff

  • Hey Whats That - Great tool to help you map point to point links.
  • Current conditions on top of Santiago Peak, Corona, CA
  • Did you know their are 782,000+ active hams?  Found this stat here.
  • PigRemote - Full range of products that allow you to remote control your rig.
  • Nice page to find conferences
  • APRS.fi - Read more about APRS here.  One day I would like to put up a APRS Weather Station
