I got my ticket 3 years ago.  DSTAR was the original driver for me to get my license.   I’ve always been interested, but it wasn’t until I was off work for a few months with back surgery that I decided to study for the exam.  It helped that I work in the Oil/Gas/Electricity Industry and communications is great portion of what I do.  Granted it is different protocols than HAM, but communicating over the air has some strong similarities.  After working out the DSTAR side of things, R-PI and DVMega’s I dabbled in AllStar nodes.  In the back of my mind, HF always interested me, but living in a condo, antennas were/are an issue.

I didn’t have a full time Elmer, however NE5U helps me out often.  I recently threw out a long wire over my balcony and started making some contacts on FT-8.  Thanks to Mike for helping me get the final settings dialed in.

Future plans, which hopefully happen in the next couple of weeks are to add receiving loop and transmit on the long wire.  The main reason for this, well noise.  Living in the city has its challenges as most of us know.   I will also add SDR into the mix to help find those signals.

Radios, well I have a few, My main rig is the IC 7100 I use in my Condo Shack.  I have 817 I got from NE5U for QRP and I bought a magloop antenna.  And Lastly I have a 706mkIIG I use at my lake house and plan having it co-locate in my RV.

As for my interests… well obviously HAM radio, but equally, is photography.  I’d say I’m a serious hobbyist.  I usually take at least 1 trip a year and have covered much of the western US, however I haven’t even made a dint in all the places I want to see or do.
