Ham Member Lookups: 300

Hello from Odessa, TX. I have been interested in radio from the age of 15. I, like many, started out CB'ing with a few of the local "old timers" and a few new guys like myself. My interest in radio has had peaks and valleys, but never dwindled completely. As a teen and a couple of times in my 20's, I began studying for my Ham license, but it never lasted long. my radio interest turned into a great love of talking SSB DX on 11 meters, but conditions became unpredictable and, at times, nonexistent. I started working in the oil fields of West Texas at the age of 15 also. I would work during summer break and most Spring breaks. This developed my love of big trucks. So after working my way up from working part time as a student to a full time employee, at the age of 23 I decided to start doing long haul trucking. I hauled oilfield pipe and equipment mostly. I thought trucking was great because I got to drive around and talk on the radio all day long. That was big fun!

Fast forward to now. I've been in outside sales with my XYL's family business for 10 years. I decided in February of 2016 that I again wanted to study for the Ham test. I took the Tech test in March 2016, then upgraded to General in September 2016. I am currently studying for the Extra test(this may take a little longer). I am enjoying Ham greatly. I get to talk 2m simplex daily to a couple of old CB friends that I haven't talked on the radio with for over 15 years! I enjoy using our local repeater system (West Texas Connection) on my trips back forth to the lake in Del Rio, TX. I am in my pick up truck the majority of the time, so most of my DX contacts have been made from the mobile so far. I am running a Yaesu FT 8900 and a Yaesu FT 857 in the mobile. Antennas are a Larsen 2/70 and a Yaesu ATAS 120. At the home QTH I am running a Yaesu FT 897 on a G5rv inveted V and a Yaesu FT 2900 2m rig with a Hy-gain Vb-28fm beam up at 50 feet. I look forward to many great years on the radio!
