My wife (KG6EUL) and I got into HAM radio in 1999 to facilitate communications while sailing the U.S. Pacific Coast and Mexico. Back then, we were early users of PACTOR digital modes for Air Mail, and later GRIB file servers. Also participated in some HF maritime nets and scheds with fellow boaters.

First HAM rig was an Icom IC-M710 marine radio moded for HF, paired with an AT-140 backstay antenna tuner. Our SCS-PTC II modem got a workout in the five years we were on the boat.

Today, many years later, I stay active in HF, VHF/UHF, D-Star and C4FM. I also enjoy building AllStar Link systems and digital mode hot-spots.

Current radios include:

  • IC-746
  • FT-991a
  • FT-817nd
  • vx-5r
  • vx-6r
  • openSpot
  • DVmega
