I obtained my Novice license at the age of 19 (WV6FDF) it was good for12 months,at that time,My first transmitter was a heath kit AT-1, given to me by Bill Eitel,(W6UF) half owner of EIMAC, who was my Elmar. The receiver was a war surplus command radio, BC type. I used a long wire antenna with a NE-2 neon light at the end which I tuned with homemade PI section tuner. I did not have a SWR bridge. So I I tuned till the neon light shown brightest . Also got RF burn from one of the set screws on the knobs that I will never forget, it made a believer out me.HI HI . After high school I went to work for EIMAC in San Carlos,CA. In the negative grid development department. But because I could not copy 13 WPM Morse code at the end of that 12 month my license expired and I did not move up to the next class. So I did nothing with ham radio for more than 20 years. Then while working in California my brother and I decided to get our Tech license. We saw an ad at H.R.O. in Oakland CA., which claimed if you attended their class for 8 hrs you would pass the technician test .So we signed up . When we arrived at the San Mateo College classroom for the session, we were surprised to find 85 people there with us. Boys, girls ,and adults from , approx.12 to 84 yrs old. After the class was over they gave us the TEST and all but TWO passed ..WOW. We were among that number who passed. They had 4 or 5 Elmars stand up and give their call signs out and said call them if we need help.. My brother ( KG6OVA.) moved back to Denver, Co. and I moved back to Washington state.

On March 17, 2004 I upgraded to General Class. My wife is perfectly happy using the telephone. Hi Hi.

" It is not the class of license the Amateur holds, but the class of the Amateur that holds the license." I saw this on W7WAC's site and liked it so much, I thought I would pass it on. 73 kg6ouz
