My Yaesu Twins.  FTdx-5000MP manufactured Febuary 2015 and FT-1000D manufactured November 1991.

The Ameritron ALS-1306 appeared under the Christmas tree in 2014. With 1.2KW output and no tuning it is a joy to operate. The ALS 1306 runs 8 MRF150 transistors at 50 volts. Total power input is 50 volts at 50 amps or 2,500 watts.

The FT-1000D with the blue display and a TV tuner band scope. This is my backup rig. Although not as advanced as as the K3 and 5000MP, it was built in 1991 and represents state of the art technology for it's time.   The models with the blue display were typically sold in Japan with a few making it into the states.

We are on 2 acres in the hills above Kalama, WA, at 1000 ft elevation overlooking the Columbia River to the West. Hunting, Hamming and Fishing are all great opportunities in this area. My main rig is now the Yeasu 5000MP (built Feb 2015) with a Yaesu 1000D for backup (built November 1991). I also have an Elecraft K3 that I built in January 2000, and a 15 watt battery powered Elecraft K2 that I built in January 2006.

Butternut HF6V Antenna with 17 and 12 meter coils added.  This has been my main antenna for 27 years. I have burried hogwire fencing under the grass for an effective ground return out to 60'.

SOTA Activation of Craggy Peak (Summits On The Air) August 7, 2015

We passed Blue Lake on the trail to the top of Craggy Peak and took advantage fo the background for a photo. From Left to Right in the Lake Picture: Greg Dyer KG7FPJ, Joe Ohama KF7UOQ, Dean Fewkes KG7MZ, Benjamin Fewkes, Robert Allen, Luke Ohama.

The Elecraft K3 performed well in the field. We worked Moscow, New Zealand and the Yukon by lantern from base camp the night before, and many SOTA contacts from Craggy Peak the following day. It was powered by a 10 Amp Hour lifePO4 Dakota lithium battery.

Building the Elecraft K-3

Finished Elecraft K3.  Built in January 2010.

Building the elecraft K-2. Each component is hand soldered. Transformers are hand wound.

Finished Elecraft K2.  Built in January, 2006.  15 Watts with a built-in battery.

Christmas Sunset from my Shack Window.  The small building is my pumphouse.

Annual family trip into the Cascade Mountains to cut Christmas Trees for each household.

Woodcutting. Wood is plentiful in the Northwest USA and we heat our house with a woodstove.

I often operate portable from our RV while camping in the mountains. I cast a wire antenna into the tall fir trees.

Mt St Helens. This picture was taken during one of our many wilderness hikes in the Northwest.  Dead trees from the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens can still be seen floating in many lakes. The young trees in the foreground have grown back since the eruption. This hike was into the Mount Margaret Back Country and included both fishing and hunting.
