I Just started this hobby 1 year ago, Its quite a bit cheaper than the car hobby and a whole lot safer. I am running a Yaesu FTDX  3000 with a Palstar A2TK tuner. My loop is recycled 4" well casing sticking out of the ground 46 feet and 520' in lenght. My 2 meter is a Icom 5100 going to 2 M2 12 2 meter antennas with a TE systems 250 Watt amp so I can shoot across the desert. I have also dabbled into DSTAR and get out using a DVdongle. I am trying to get the Raspberry Pi set up to access D-star and also DMR I am totally off the grid. This is a Great Hobby and a lot of the people in it are so very helpful. Thank you to everyone that helps a New Ham. I plan to pay it forward..  Update I have since departed with my Yeasu and purchased a IC-7300 Love it. I also upgraded my Palstar to Automatic tuner and a clear signal is just a touch of a button or a screen away.
