Hello, My name is James.   Thanks for the lookup..

I live in San Jose, Ca. I retired in 2003 after working most of my life doing Analog Power Electronics. Now, I spend my time doing Amateur Radio, Computer and enjoying my retirement. I have a beautiful wife who works and I stay home and keep the garden watered.  I turned 74 years old in May.  As such, some days are Diamonds, some days are not, but every day is A ok. Growing old is NOT for sissy's..

My current station is comprised of a Yaesu Ft-990,  Ft-950 and a FT-900 . My amplifier is a Heathkit SB-220 and antenna is a Hygain MK-4 three element triband beam up about 35 ft.  I also have an OCF dipole for occasional  use on the other bands.

All SSB contacts are made on the FT-950..   I use Ham Radio Delux software to perform all the CAT control through a simple serial cable.  With the computer and a mouse,  I have complete station operation control..  The software even turns the rig on and off for me.. Never need to go into the set up menu's to make adjustments to power, audio, bands or modes.  The software also has a Bandscope that shows activity, signal strength and allows me to QSY with a mouse click.  How much better can it get?  A big thumbs up for HRD software...

I recently purchased a SDR-PLAY digital receiver and I am using SDR-Console V3 software with it.  What a delight to use! I can see all the bands from edge to edge and a click of the mouse lock in any QSO or mode..  10Khz to 2 Ghz,, With an outlay of about $150..  If you have not tried using a SDR you should do yourself a favor and give this little black box a try..  I have three very good Yaesu HF radio's and this SDR rig has the best receiver of any of them..  Love the variety of filters and the pleasant tone of the recieve audio..  I am thinking of designing a relay box to listen with the SDR and transmit using my FT-950 radio.. I have ordered some parts to give this a try..

Last year the CW bug bit me again. I started around the 12th of  November to do some CW with the FT-900.  Hoping to regain some of my code skills.. If you hear my CQ, please give me a call.  I am in the 13 to 15 WPM range but that may improve with time..  My hearing is somewhat compromised, so I wear headphones  to capture as much audio as possible..   If the signal path is good, I do ok, but if there is QRM,  I often find it a struggle to copy.  SSB mode is a no-brainer, Data modes are just too easy..  For me CW is always hard work,  it requires constant attention and that  makes my brain tired.   That is why I choose to do this again.  I now have about 200 CW contacts in the log book..   Nothing  improves without practice, effort and determination .. One QSO at a time,  I am enjoying the challenge.

Thank you for your patience..

My goal in radio is WAH. (Whisky Alpha Hotel) (Worked All Hams.)

I'll be Looking for you on the bands...

I enjoyed our QSO.
