Ham Member Lookups: 296

New ham since 8/10/2011. I managed to pass my technician and general license tests and have been eager to get on the air. My grandfather was an old ham, as was my dad, so I thought it fitting to go where I knew I would enjoy myself.

My primary interests are computers (of which I have a good deal of knowledge and experience), and electronics (of which I am very new to learning). I also enjoy music, fishing, and many other adventurous hobbies, although I don't get to do them much any more.

Keep an ear out for me, and please be patient, as I'm pretty green on the air, but I've done a lot of listening, and hope keep your ears as pain-free as possible. Oh, and don't be afraid to send me a tip if you hear me mess up. I always accept constructive criticism with a willing ear.

Anyway, 73, and hope to hear from you all on the air!

-Kevin

Kenwood TS-530S

Kenwood TS-530S -- My first rig. Older, but still works pretty good. I think I might have to replace my finals soon. Not sure, but I can't seem to get more than 50-70w out of this 100w rig. I've still got a lot to learn though, so hopefully I will realize that it was a mistake I was making while tuning it up, or just to expect that from this kind of radio. I'm doing just fine with it so far though, so I'll keep on it!

My first transmitting antenna. I have put a lot of time into reading about how to make your own antennas, although I feel like the surface has JUST been scratched. This is my vertical 2m antenna that was loaned from my Elmer on top of my own mast made of the top rail of chain link fencing, and a closet rod from Ace Hardware. Total cost was about $25 or so. Then I made my own Ugly Balun using coax and PVC. My inverted V dipole is currently tuned to 20m and works pretty good on 40m. I have another antenna my Elmer loaned me that is a multi-band. Hopefully I will have the money to put that one up properly in a week or 2.  I still have to buy enough transmission line, ends, masts, etc. to get it erected.  My trees just aren't in the right places to use them effectively.  Oh well, I'll get there soon.
