This is something I was first interested in when I was about 10 years old.  I worked towards my Novice licence but never followed thru with the 5wpm CW requirment.  I might still have my Farnsworth LPs somewhere.

Fast foward many years.  My son KM4MFZ and I began our Amatur Radio journey in the summer of 2015.  I use an Anytone 3318E 2m/70cm HT.  We have a Icom 2M moble in our garage shack running from a PC power supply I adapted.  My son and I built our antenna.  it is a 3/4" copper J-pole on 15ft mast.  It works quit well.

11-09-2015  I just got my CS 750 DMR radio.  Lots of new stuff to learn.  I worked this year to earn my General and Amatur Extra licences.  The Extra privleges are worth the work.  I have found that I do enjoy working DX.  Whenever I am inn my garage / shack, I am looking at a spotting page looking for interesting oppourtunities.

1n 2016, one of me great Elmers lent and eventualy sold me a Yeaseu FT 707.  This 30+ year old classic works unbelevably well. I think it was a good choice for me to get my feet wet in HF.  Compleatly analog, it's sound is so smooth even my cat likes it.  I have hooked it up to my computer and occasionaly work some of the digital modes like JT65 and such. I have even coppied some SSTV!

I also spent some time studing antennas this year and settled on a design that has worked well for my QTH.  I built a simple elevated vertical antenna of 32.5ft.  The 8 radials are spread out mostly accross my roof with 2 on the ground near my property line. With an MFJ tunner, I can easily work 17, 20, 40.  While I can probably tune 80M I don't think I am very effective there.  On the other bands I regurlary work accross the world including New Zealand.  No Anp yet. Just 100Wats.  I also have a GR5V up but the verticle always seems to work better.

I still use my CS750 DMR radio almost daily and try to get on HF every evening if I can.  It's all been great fun.
