September 9, 2017 - Recently received the results of the FLSPOTA and proud to say I came in first place. I'm sure there will be more participants next year, and more competition.

Was also glad to receive my 13 Colonies Certificate for getting a CW clean sweep. That was pretty lucky, but I'll take what I can get. LOL

FLSPOTA - Worked Florida State Parks on the Air on April 1st, 2017. Operated from the back seat of my car just like in the photo below. I was in Oleta River State Park (OLR) in North Miami Beach, Florida. KFF-1908_EL95ww   That is just north of the city of Miami proper. It was a very busy Saturday with temperatures in the high 80s which is why I operating from inside the car with the air conditioning running. It was strange that there were folks in New England operating during a blizzard with 2 feet of snow on the ground while I was in my car due to the heat. Made 147 contacts which I thought was pretty good considering the band condx. And some DX: Panama, Croatia, Belgium, Canary Islands & Italy. After the end of NPOTA it was fun to work portable again. One of these days I need to empty my ham gear out of the car. hi hi

NPOTA 2016:  Well, it's over! All things must come to an end. I made 5,413 contacts for NPOTA. 62 activations in 24 states. 5,000 contacts was my personal goal and I made it on December 22, 2016 from NP18. It was a CW contact, and with the band conditions it took 15 minutes calling CQ to get that last contact to put me at 5,000. Very happy. Thanks to number 5,000: W1WQG and to all Chasers!!!  All logs have been uploaded to LOTW. If we had a QSO, and it's not showing up, please contact me and we'll figure out why. Going to miss NPOTA.

I've made some NPOTA QSL cards. If your in the log and would like a QSL card please send a SASE with your card, and put the park designator on your QSL card to help me locate our QSO. Thanks to all the chasers for the fun time. Hope to meet you on the radio soon. 73, Gary

Working from the car at Everglades National Park...November 16, 2016.
Too many "Skeeters" to work from outside! hi hi

Working NPOTA while in Everglades National Park.

MY BIO: My father, Robert Otto Stephan (W1IYM) was the youngest licensed Ham in the state of Connecticut when he was first licensed in the early 1930s', and later he served in WWII in the Signal Corps.  He is now a Silent Key, and I continue practicing to get close to the proficiency he had in CW!

I was first licensed in 1991 as KD6BRX - Novice/Technician. That year I had the highest score in the LAX section in the Novice Roundup which doesn’t exist anymore. I received my Extra KN6DM in 1993, but soon after that I went off the air for various reasons, mostly moving and apartments.

In 2014 I lost my wife, and I decided to retire. In July 2015 I again became active in amateur radio, purchased a Yaesu FT-450D (which served me well until my new IC-7300 purchased after Dayton 2016), and applied for a 4 district callsign. Living in South Florida in a Homeowners Association I have constructed a few dipoles in my attic, and to keep any possible RFI down I’m running mostly CW usually at 50 watts.

After being off the air for such a long time the learning curve is very steep, but I’m working hard to try and catch up and learn the digital modes which were in their infancy when I last was active in Amateur Radio. After becoming active again I had a PSK31 contact with a Russia op, over 6,000 miles away, with a dipole in my attic! That is what is so great about Amateur Radio!

I've put up more antennas, but none work very well in the attic. I can get on all bands 80 - 10 with minimal success. I've really been enjoying NPOTA activations since my portable ops work much better than the home QTH.

Hope to see you on the air. 73

Kayaking in Stiltsville just offshore from Miami, which is part of Biscayne National Park.

On the road in my Winnebago. Doing NPOTA activations. 63 activations, 53 National Parks in 24 states.

My keys just keep growing!
