Thank you for looking me up.

I am a UK amateur radio user, but am still new to the hobby as I've only been licensed since 2005!  I was born in 1977 in West Germany and was brought up as a child of the 'forces'.

My family settled in Wiltshire (England) in 1986 when my father retired from the RAF.  I still live in Wiltshire, but enjoy travelling.  My favourite chill-out destination is the Limburg region of the Netherlands, in particular the Beesel / Roermond area.

I enjoy HF and using SSB, but sometimes I can be heard on 2m or 70cm or working through one of the local repeaters such as GB3UB, GB3JB, or GB7BS - although this is mainly when /m or /p.

I qualified for my Foundation Licence in 2005 and intend, in due time, to take the Intermediate course, when time allows.

Portable / DX / High-ground operation

From time to time, I go portable on the NORTH WESSEX DOWNS near DEVIZES in Wiltshire.  The spot I predominantly use is on ROUNDWAY DOWN and is highground, approximately 218 metres above sea level and the site of the Battle of Roundway Down (1643).

As a Foundation Licence holder and restricted to only 10w, the advantage of a little elevation can make a significant difference.  Besides, it means I can waffle away until the early hours without disturbing my own family and neighbours!

Typical Operating Conditions

Oftentimes I can found working alongside Julian (GØRMA) and usually operating from our van with the following (typical) setup...

  • Yaesu FT-450D (with built in antenna tuner)
  • Hytera MD785 DMR radio
  • ICOM 706 Mk IIG
  • 11m rig

  • 40 metre (full size) Delta Loop aerial between two extendable fishing poles, or
  • Alpha Antenna's 10-40m Magnetic Loop antenna mounted on a camera tripod, or
  • Prowhip mini 20m Delta Loop
  • G5RV
  • 9 Element Tonna (VHF)

We have a fantastic little 12v PC and dual 12v monitors configured for two workstations in the van, running N1MM software which is absolutely superb for the job.

To find out more about our mobile setup, please visit our FACEBOOK page and give us a LIKE.

When I operate from home, my typical set up will be a mixture of the following:

  • Transceivers
    • Leixen VV-898 2m/70cm FM Radio
    • Yaesu FT-450D HF/50MHz Radio

Mobile Operations

I have a Hytera MD685G in my car which is mainly for use on the S.W. CLUSTER, although as more and more Phoenix repeaters come online in my home area, I am using these more and more too.

My Hytera MD685G is connected to an external rail mounted antenna (usually a tiny Maplin ¼wave Sirio Antenna.

Usually I can be found on either TG950 of the SW Cluster, or on TG810 of Phoenix.

Clubs, Groups & Associations

I am also a proud member of the following Amateur Radio related Groups, Clubs or Associations....

Please take the time to check them out!

Ongoing Projects

I am currently working with South West DMR Group and helping setup their second repeater.  I helped with the first, GM7KM based at Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire and am currently helping set up a homebrew DMR repeater for installation West Wiltshire (GB7WW).

This is an exciting project, as it brings not only DMR to an area not currently connected to the World Wide digital networks, but also will potentially allow for D-Star and Fusion integration too, which is very exciting.  For more information on the work being done by SOUTH WEST DMR, please visit and LIKE their FACEBOOK page.
