I am just getting started on the adventure of Amateur Radio. A friend of mine (W4CRG) posted on FaceBook that his radio helped him during a recent blackout and I was convinced.

The following week I sat for my Technician and General Exams and received my ticket on August 8, 2016.  With a bit more study, I passed my Extra exam on August 20, 2016.

I am looking forward to learning more about antennae, APRS, PSK31, etc. I also have an interest in learning CW but we will see if that works out... fingers-crossed.

The Shack

The home shack is on hold for now with a baby on the way however it consists of an IC7300 which seems to be very easy to use. I just cobbled together an antenna with a wire tied to a short tree in my front yard and then threw it over the roof to the back of the house. I use a 9:1 UNUN that matches on 20 M and is tuned with the IC7300. The antenna is fed with DX Engineering 400MAX cable and an 8x8 RF choke coil. I will use my MFJ-945E tuner to handle what the IC7300 cannot.

On The Air

I have made my first phone contact in this new hobby with someone from Italy. So exciting! I am also exploring JT65 and use WSJT-X for that purpose.

APRS & Mobile

A Kenwood TM D-710GA is installed in my 2012 Chevy Volt. Its dual bands and APRS are making the drive a bit more interesting. Feel free to find me on APRS.fi

I use a Kenwood TH-D74A as my go to HT. I use a VHF DVAP to get to reflectors when my HT cannot hit the local D-STAR repeater, W3DHS. I picked up a TYT-MD290 UHF DMR recently and have created a local codeplug for Baltimore, MD, although I have not had a chance to play with it much.

Logging and QSLs

I log contacts on my PC with Amateur Contact Log by N3FJP. I will upload my logs to LotW and eQSL daily.

Clubs and Organizations

In an effort to learn more about amateur radio and get involved, I have joined two local clubs, Amateur Radio Club of the National Electronics Museum and the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club. I have met some very interesting and wonderful members at these clubs and hope to contribute as I learn more. I have also joined Anne Arundel County, Maryland ARES and RACES to provide some useful community service.

Personal Stuff

I currently live in Rockville, MD with my wife and two daughters.  I have been in the DC/Baltimore Metro area for 15 years but I am a New Yorker at heart. I was born in NYC and raised in the suburbs. I went to college in central New York and enjoyed east coast skiing (on ice) and astronomy as my pass times. Nowadays, the focus is on work and family. I am hoping I can start this new hobby as a way to relax after work and my children's bedtime.
