Greetings from Randolph, Massachusetts, about 15 miles south of Boston.

I am originally from Worcester, MA, and went to school in Worcester and New Britain, CT. I was first licensed commercially (old 1st Phone, now GROL) in 1971 and am now retired (July, 2015) after being a radio and television broadcast engineer for almost 50 years.  It's interesting that I seem to be busier now than when I was working!  

In college I was on the air on weekends in front of the mic on WCCS-AM at Central Connecticut State College and also during the week behind the camera at their television center, CCSC-TV.  I have also worked in radio and television stations in Hartford, CT (WTIC-AM-FM, WPOP-AM, WEDH-TV); Worcester, MA (WSMW-TV); New Bedford, MA (WTEV-TV/CBS); and Boston, MA (WNAC-TV(CBS)/WNEV-TV(CBS)/WHDH-TV(NBC) -- the same station (channel-7) but three different owners, and WLVI-TV, our newest co-owned/co-operated station purchased and moved to our location in 2006).   That's the channel 7, WHDH-TV, tower in Newton, MA, shown below .  It's a 1,067 foot self-supporting tower.  Its twin sister is the WITI-TV tower in Milwaukee. 

In 1979 I traveled to Peking, China, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was part of a six person crew shooting a documentry "Ozawa in Peking" which earned us an Emmy in 1980. We were the first American local television station to be allowed into communist China since Richard Nixon's visit as president. 

I've been interested in radio communications ever since I was a young teenager, and built my first receiver from a kit. After doing a bit of broadcast band dxing along with shortwave listening, I was issued a call sign from the old Popular Electronics Magazine of WPE1FVU.  In 1966 I received my 3rd Class Phone License and "interned" at a local radio station, WORC-AM, on Saturday mornings while still in high school in Worcester. What an experience! (see pic below) That set the stage for a long career in broadcasting.

My first "Elmer" was Franny Moy, W1SPG (sk). Even though I didn't get licensed for a number of years later, we always kept in close touch and once I did become licensed, we spoke many times on the radio. He was a great friend and mentor.

I have been a ham operator for more than 25 years, first as N1NQR, and upgraded to Extra and certified as an ARRL VE in early 2012.  I am now the VE session manager at K1USN.  In July, 2012, I was issued a new call sign, W1OD, formerly held by a well respected writer for QST and ARRL staff member, Mike Kaczynski. It's nice to run into so many folks, both on the air and especially in person, who knew Mike and speak so highly of him. 

I'm operating a Yaesu FT-950 at 100 watts with an Electrovoice EV-635A microphone into a Buckmaster 7-band "DX-OCF" dipole antenna, as well as a Yaesu FT-8800 mobile and a Yaesu FT-60r HT. I belong to and am active in the Whitman Amateur Radio Club and the K1USN Radio Club and enjoy ragchewing although I'll gladly help out any contesters I hear. I'm starting to get into Slow Scan TV and came up with an old-style test pattern below. Still working on getting the interface set up though.  

Being an aviation buff, especially Naval aviation, I have recently become a member ofthe Patriot Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation.  We meet in the Shea Naval Aviation Museum located in the old recreation building at the former South Weymouth (MA) Naval Air Station, now called "Union Point", on the second and last Saturdays of the month from 09:00 - 12:00.  We've just obtained A Grumman C-1 Trader nose section and cockpit (see pic below) which we're going to be restoring over the next year or so, and somehow move it into our Museum.  There is a lot of site work going on around the current museum building due to the redevelopment of the former Air Station, so some access is limited.  UPDATE: We were recently informed we will not be reopening the museum in its current location.  The developers have other plans for the building and as such are making plans to move the current Welcome Center and Shea Memorial Grove with the A4 jet to the entrance of the former base.  The Welcome Center will be our new and permanent home and the developer will be working with us to create new and exciting displays of the history of the naval air station.  We are all very excited at this news!  After a number of years of weathering, the lettering on the A4 was becoming a bit ratty, so in September 2017, we spent a few days cleaning the aircraft and masking and repainting the lettering just in time for the 20th anniversary reunion of NAS SoWey (see pic below).

K1USN and the Patriot Squadron have a lot in common and we are hoping to have a few combined events in the upcoming months.  You can read about both organizations via <www.K1USN.com> and <www.anapatriotsquadron.org> .  

The Shea Naval Aviation Museum now has an amateur radio club, W1NAS, and I am the trustee as well as a member of the Museum Committee.  Check out the W1NAS QRZ page for upcoming events including a wrap-up of the Special Event Station on August 20th, once again comemmorating the flight of the U.S. Navy Blimp "Snow Goose" from NAS SoWey to Resolute Bay in the Arctic Circle and back, while the USS Nautilus, SSN 571, was deployed on "Operation Northwest Passage"  sailed under the polar ice cap to the North Pole.  We joined forces with the Tri-City ARC in Groton CT, who operated as N1S from the pier of the USS Nautilus in Groton in conjunction with us.  We commemorated that event for the first time in August, 2015, and had a much more successful performance Saturday, August 20, 2016, with more than 80 QSO's.  August 19, 2017 proved to be a little challenging in having this Special Event as the Museum was closed due to ongoing site construction as part of the redevelopment of the former Naval Air Station.  But K1USN came through and we operated three stations as W1NAS from K1USN in nearby Braintree, MA, and made about 75 contacts despite lousy band conditions.  Next year will be the 60th anniversary of that special flight and we're going to start planning for it real soon.  Keep checking the W1NAS QRZ page for updates, and don't forget to look us up on the air!   

Besides ham radio, I enjoy aviation, photography, cruising, scuba diving, Freemasonry (PM, PDDGM, Lodge secretary for 20+ years), the Shriners and Shrine Clowns (there's no better feeling than being able to bring a smile to a sick child's face), and have written a number of books and articles on Masonic officer training.  I've been conducting leadership training seminars for the Masonic Fraternity in Massachusetts for more than 20 years.

After many years of dreaming, I finally became certified in open water Scuba in 2011 and have been diving in Aruba, Bermuda, Bonaire, Cozumel, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and Freeport in the Bahamas. With water temperatures in the mid 80's to low 90's, depending on the time of the year, it's much better than the cold New England waters! There's so much to see and experience in the warm Caribbean waters.

Sept. 2014..... After much stress, and wondering what the heck they were thinking when LOTW was designed, I finally got the darned thing to work.  If you tried and gave up, I can honestly say that I don't blame you one bit!  As far as my using it as a sole logging program, well, that's just not going to happen.  QRZ, HRD, and my paper logs will always be kept.  But now that it's up and running, it's okay.  I am more impressed with the QRZ logging program!
