I'm active with Summits on the Air!

SOTA Association Manager for W3..

Hopefully we have made a contact! probably it was Summits on the Air (SOTA) related which is my primary interest. I'm located in W3 region (and association manager) ... and we still have plenty of virgin summits here and varied terrain for the SOTA activator.. Simple drive-ups and more challenging hikes. (feel free to contact me if you're heading our way and would like some local G2)

... like many SOTA-ites, I'm not sure if i'm a Portable operator that likes to wander in the mountains or a Walker that likes to play Radio, either way, SOTA and QRP are to me ideal radio-play.

Equipment... Rigs: KX3, FT857 (when power is needed),  LNR mtr5b

Battery Power: I use homebrew 4S1P A123 (or K2) 26650 cells, each pack will allow around 1.5 to 2hrs operation. I also have a homebrew 4S3P pack for use with the FT857

Antennas: a. Link Dipole (20,30,40,60m mounted at around 5-15ft. Sometimes I deploy a reflector on the ground. This set-up works very well and is very quick to set-up and break-down. 26ga link dipole with Sotabeams 1:1Balun and 25ft of RG174 Coax. 9oz.

b. Back-up antenna.. Tuned LNR precision End fed Half Wave at ~20-25ft as in inverted "V".  or LNR MTR + 10ft of RG174 = 10oz

HT: Yaesu VX-8.... it's the most complicated piece of equipment I own, but I have it programmed now :)

Operating CW at TOP: Sharp Top Mtn (W4V/RA-004), VA and Narrow Mtn (W3/PW-043), PA

My QSO card // Mt. Shavano 14,229ft during the 2016 14'er Event.

Photo from Activation of SOTA hill W3/SV-010 Brambaugh Mtn taken 1/30/16 around 16:30hrs (local) temp was around 0F (-15C).

From W4V/HB-029 February 2017 as I hit 800 Activator points..

The things to experiance in the Mountains...

N2GBR is  USA MG #47, the only W3 MG. To reach 1000 activator points I activated 131 Unique Summits (So my MG was 100% unique), never failing to activate a summit (So I made a min. of 4 QSO's for each). Ave points per activation of 7.7

34 First SOTA Activations for that summit.

Key Regions activated

W3 -- 85

W4V -- 26

W8 - 9

W0C -- 8

It took from November 11, 2014 to June 18th, 2017 to reach 1000 points; this was 30months (Ave. for all US MG is 35months)

I did many winter activations, and 150 of my MG points are winter bonus points earned during the Dec 1 through March 31 periods.

My activations were a mixture of Phone/SSB and then later some CW; 95% of my activations were HF QRP @ 5W using FT817 and KX3 Radios… (I used a VX8 HT for VHF and an FT857 occasionally when conditions were Very Poor…)

Logged 1790 total activation QSO's; 121 CW QSO's and 36 FM QSO's

Averaged 13.7 QSO’s per activation.

Logged 89 S2S (Summit to Summit) QSO's by June 2017.

I operated on the 80, 60, 40, 20, & 17meter bands.  Most of my activations were on two or more bands.

My antennas were/are mostly Dipoles.. Either a Link dipole or OCF, early on I used an Par Ends End-Fed.

Mostly using trees for support… occasionally bushes and vary rarely a SotaBeams 10M mast.

Preliminary.. 2018 Goals

1. continue my CW Journey

2. TBD.... :)

Home station is an Elecraft K3S+P3 with an Alpha Delta DX-CC at around 55ft oriented NW-SE, a 10-40m OCF Dipole oriented E-W, in the works is a 5-band Spiderbeam and roof tower.

4. . Current edition QSO card...  Being a British guy in the USA.. I like the idea of the Allied invasion strips on the Spitfire, not that it's everyones cup of Tea, but there are a few of us over here... Er, keeping an eye on things, for Her Majestry.... ;)

I prefer to send QSLs by mail. You send me one, I'll send you one. No SASE needed. If you care enough to send me a card from wherever you are, I’ll return one to you.

...Also into Photography, motorcycles (KTM) etc. etc.
