I'm an active County Hunter - You can find me on primarily on 14.0565, 10.1225, 18091.5, or 7056.5, either running counties or helping on the net. Many people have Worked All States (W.A.S.) or DXCC. Only slightly over 1250 people have qualified for the CQ Magazine sponsored USCA (U.S. Counties Award) for having confirmed contacts with all 3077 counties in the U.S. However, you can get the first level award with only 500 counties confirmed.

You can become 'addicted' to county hunting, and work all the counties a second or third time, or work them on different bands, or both on SSB and CW for different awards. About 120 people have worked all 3077 counties on CW.

I'm also an active mobile station, having transmitted from each of the 3077 USA counties - lots of driving, but fun to give out the rare counties along the way.  This past year, after 12 more years of running counties, I finished transmitting from all 3077 counties a SECOND time!

In 2016, the National Parks on the Air program has kept me busy.  As of 11/30, my new car has 43,400 plus miles from visiting 261 different 'park units' around the country.   Lots of fun.  Over 36,000 contacts for NPOTA have been uploaded to LoTW.

In 2017, the WWFF program of Parks on the Air has kept me busy.   This is a follow on program to NPOTA now using state parks, preserves, and wildlife areas.

When not on the radio, my second major interest is telecom/wireless history, especially telegraphy.. Along the way, I've accummulated a few telegraph sounders, keys, relays and other items - I'm always on the lookout for these. I'm also now interested in regenerative receivers - especially the kits from the 1930s-1960s.

Come visit the County Hunter Forum, Friday Afternoon, Dayton Hamvention every year in the Main meeting rooms to learn about county hunting or do a web search.

I write the free county hunter news for those interested in county hunting at www.chnewsonline.com

Currently I'm researching regen receivers and collecting and building a few.

Picture: N4CD standing at the "County Line". In county hunting, if a mobile station is parked so that part of the car is in each of two counties at a boundary, then county hunters get credit for both counties with one contact. Part of the vehicle must actually be in each of the two counties. Sometimes, you can't safely park to be able to do that, so you run each county separately! If the counties are separated by water (river, creek), then you normally cannot run that 'wet county line' as the boundary is often not shown precisely on maps, or is in the middle of the bridge (unsafe). Occasionally , I like to be DX, and be 'hunted' by DXers. The last few N4CD mini DXpeditions have been to TI2(Apr 2001 -9000 plus QSOs), and 3W2DC (Oct 2001- 5000 QSOs), and FG(Nov 2001 - 12,200 QSOs)) .

Team TI9M, Cocos Island DXpedition 2002 , made 80,000 QSO 20 Feb to Mar 2. This was one of the highlights of my life, with 14 team members putting in tremendous effort to make it all happen! see www.qsl.net/ti9m for pics and story.
