Hello, I go by "Sly" for short in place of my real name. Please use that. I picked up that nickname in the late 70's when the first "Rocky" movies with Sylvester Stallone started to appear.
I got my novice ticket (ka5shq) in 1983 under elmer Mark Storey, W5MAS. Right after my novice ticket came in I rushed down to the Houston FCC field office and tested for my tech. Passed it and was granted my current call sign and have kept it ever since. Never opted (yet) for a vanity. As time went by and license and code requirements changed I qualified to upgrade to General (from Tech w/ code). Then several years ago I finally tested for Extra and passed.
I am mainly active on 2 meters and 440 FM. I am active on D-Star, you can usually find me on reflector 4b. I am just a little active on hf, usually checking into checks and some digital modes. Not much into contesting or dx chasing.
I am active in the local/stx ARES group and the TX State RACES. It is probably where most of my ham activity time goes.
I am also an avid scannist, listening to police/fire and public safety. I nearly always have a scanner on at the house. I have several Unidens, GRE and Radio Shack scanners.
I attend several of the Texas hamfests so look for me there (Belton, Plano, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Texas City to name a few).
