First licensed as a Novice in 1976 with WN5VSS. Became a General in 1978 with WB5VSS. Upgraded to Extra in 1989. Needless to say, Amateur radio has helped me discover "many things." For example: As a Novice, you always got the experience first and then the lesson later. That was such a good time in my life, being a Novice.

Stayed a Novice for two years. (That's all a Novice license was good for back then.) When my Novice ticket was about to expire I finally got up the nerve to drive to Dallas Texas to the Federal Buildng and found Room 13E7. Now then, being an18 year old kid from a small town in Oklahoma, driving to Dallas was a huge event for me. I discovered things like: Getting lost in a big city, one way streets, hookers on a street corner and being thankful I'm from a small town.

Being a General class license was a wonderful addition to my ham radio hobby. I stayed a Genral for about 11 years. Working as a Telecommunications Field Technician and traveling up and down the highways a lot, I enjoyed a lot of mobile HF operation. I workred the world with my Radio Shack HTX-100 and a magnet mount.

Obtained my Advanced ticket in 1989. A couple of months later I upgraded to Extra (20 WPM). The vanity call, N5VU,was obtained in 1999. From all accounts, it was never issued. I was a radio Dee Jay while attending Oklahoma State Tech in the late 70s. I found out that the life of a radio Dee Jay was a pathetic pay scale. Therefore, I obtatined my 1st class Phone in 1980. (P1-10-33611). I quickly found out that there was more money working on the opposite end of the microphone. I've been working in the railroad telecommunication industry full time since 1980. I still enjoy part time Radio Broadcast Engineering. I love the old analog VU meters. That's where the idea for N5VU came from. Additionally, it's 10 times better on CW.

I love to DX and Contest using CW, RTTY and phone. In that order.
