Just call me "Bob"

I have operated under former call signs KM6FWA and KM6REK.

Born and raised in California, my brother John AI6LY, and I got into CB radio about 50 years ago at the ripe old ages of 11 and 12.  We had alway been facinated by electronics and radios, but as we grew into our teens,  radio took a back seat with school, sports and other things. We both headed off to college at UCLA and then our separate ways to start careers. .

That's my brother, AI6LY, and me above working a QSO in my backyard with an impromptu wire antenna set up.

I went to dental school in St. Louis, MO, and returned to California after receiving my dental degree, met the love of my life, Callie, got married and returned to Ventura, CA, where I have practiced general dentistry in the county for over 34 years, first in Oxnard and then here in Ventura since 2008.  We have 2 grown children, Ryan and Chelsea who have each recently married the loves of their lives.

I volunteer for the Santa Monica Mountains Mountain Bike Unit (MBU) and a couple of years ago, my team acquired Baofeng HT's to use while on patrol in the back country. Shortly after that, my brother, who had recently gotten his ham license, was down for a visit and told me "You know, that's a ham radio."  I happened to Google my brother's call sign  after his visit and discovered that he had attained his Extra Class ticket.  That was the only kick in the pants that I needed, so decided it was time to make an effort to scratch another item off my bucket list. I found Norm K6YXH and Naomi WBOHW Goodkin and their ham radio class and passed my Technician's exam on October 16, 2016. Two weeks later, I tested for and got my General ticket. I initially started out working 440 and the 2 meter band with my HT, but upgraded to a Yaesu FT-991 with an SP-10 speaker, an MFJ 30 amp power supply, and an MFJ-993 IntelliTuner running up to an Alpha Delta DX-EE antenna that covers 10, 15, 17, 20 and 40 meters. My brother built a home brew 80 meter trapped dipole that we added to the DX-EE. I also have a Kenwood TS-2000 that is just hooked up to my dual band Diamond X-200 antenna right now. I can usually be found on the Winsystem network in the evenings or on the 3905 CCN 40 M Late Net or looking for a QSO on 20  or 40 meters on the weekends during the day. After acquiring Ham Radio Deluxe, I have been getting into the digital modes, not only PSK31 and RTTY, but also JT-65 and FT-8. I also have just started working FM satellites with my HTs and my new Arrow hand held dual band satellite antenna.  In addition, I have a lightweight 20/40M trapped dipole antenna that I put up with a 28' telescoping mast on the back of our 5th wheel trailer in an inverted "V" configuation so I can operate portable out of our RV. So far I have operated out of San Simeon State Beach, Pismo Beach, Del Norte Redwoods State Park, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park and Yosemite National Park in California.  I also enjoy working the 3905 Century Club 40 Meter Late Net and dropping into the Ohana Net on 20 meters when I get the chance.

After 3 months of hard work and study, I passed the exam for the Amateur Extra class license in June of 2017.

In addition to amatuer radio and mountain biking, I enjoy playing guitar and play in the praise and worship band at our church. I am a novice fly fisherman and my wife and I enjoy getting away from it all whenever we can in our 5th wheel RV.

Trout fishing in the Sierra Nevadas                                                    Playing for my son's wedding.
