I am a retired electrical engineer living in Prineville, Oregon. I retired from L-3 Communications - Aviation Recorders in Sarasota, FL after working for 30 years as a test engineer and test engineering manager. L-3 Communications - Aviation Recorders manufactures the "black box" that they take out of plane crashes. L3AR has the lion's share of the world market for cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders. Here's what one looks like.
If you want to win a bet, ask someone what color the "black box" is. Answer: orange (for visibility).
L3AR also has about 90% of the maritime (cruise ships, tankers, ferry boats, etc.) voyage recorder market. If you've taken a cruise in the last 10 years then L-3's voyage recorder was likely on the front of the vessel.
