Welcome fellow hams! Thanks for visiting my info page. My name is Ercan Tuzcular.

I was brought up in Istanbul and first became interested in radio at the age of 10, by listening to medium and shortwave broadcast stations on a domestic Philips radio with tubes.

In the age of 12 I began to learn German and a year later English; BBC, VOA, HCJB, Radio Austria, DW and Radio Sweden were my favorite stations.

After reading a biography book about the inventor Edison, I became interested in morse code and learned it optically on a flashlight with a signal keyer.

During a visit I found and lent The Radio Amateur’s Handbook (ARRL) from the U.S. Cultural Center Library, I got the bug and became very interested in Ham Radio. So I began to learn everything about it and to hear hams on a Grundig Satellit. After becoming a ham, my first contact as TA1ET was a Russian station in Novorossiysk on the Black Sea.

During that first CW QSO, I was so excited, that I forgot my own name during the QSO. After my first CW QRP rig Heathkit HW-8, I upgraded to HW-32 and than to HW-101.

As an active member of the Turkish Radio Amateur Club (TRAC), I tutored morse code and operating skill courses. In 1978 I was elected President of the TRAC Istanbul Branch.

Then I went to Austria and while studying at University of Vienna, I passed the Austrian exam and got the top level (große Lizenz) ham license.

For contesting I used the well equipped ADXB-OE station in Vienna. Afterwards I returned to Turkey and got the new callsign TA1L. Working actively in the emerging digital modes and helping newcomers in TRAC, I became President of the Istanbul Branch for a second term in 2004.

After a number of years of inactivity, during my visit of HamRadio in Friedrichshafen, I found interest in QRP operations and DX contests.

Nowadays my main interests besides making contacts via CW and Phone are QRP operating, experimenting with antennas such as half-wave endfeds, testing new low-power digital modes like JTxx and visiting amateur radio rallies in Europe. I regularly visit HamRadio and InterRadio Exhibitions.

I have been an amateur radio operator for over 40 years now and through the years my passion to ham radio only grows exponentially.

73, Ercan
