I became interested in amateur radio as a kid in the early 1970's and was an avid SWL. In the early 1990's I found the time to get licensed.

I currently operate mobile and portable keeping a hand written log of my most recent QSO's.

The mobile rig is an Icom 7000 and the portable rig is the FT817/QRP. I am always experimenting with home brew antenna, baluns, tapped coils and whips.

Often I use shock corded whip antenna and coils from buddipole to cover 10 - 40m for mobile and portable operations. I use a hustler antenna for 80m mobile.

Product Reviews of equipment I own:

The Best Portable/Mobile 10m antenna "I" have ever used was a light weight 4pc shock corded whip antenna about 86" (4pc x 22" segments seated) total working length, threaded on top of a 22" buddipole arm (108" total length, SWR 1.4:1 or less on 10m) and then mounted to a heavy spring. I use a large tri-magnet mount for mobile operations and it works very well for me. The antenna is just a bit longer than a perfectly calculated 1/4 wave, tunes up near perfectly with low swr across the entire 10 meter band, it is durable, well made and smartly packs away. I found the antenna easily handles highway driving, 130km/hr /75mph ++ wind loads and it works great! http://www.buddipole.com/mistshwh.html and http://www.buddipole.com/exanar.html.

The ICOM 7000 mobile radio I use is getting old and worn out. Currently its real time clock will not display properly and the rear speaker jack has failed. In 2013 I had it repaired by ICOM for powering up into a locked state. They were able to fix the locked state problem but informed me that in order to fix the real time clock I would have to replace the radios CPU at a cost of $500+, I declined the CPU repair because of cost. The radio works well enough as it is, I don't miss the real time clock in the car. I like the form factor of the ICOM 7000, the radio has been installed in clean new VW vehicles trunk mounted with the radios head dash mounted. The best feature of the radio is its filtering, from notch filters to noise filters, all are very good. The radio display is good, the menu systems and screen options are also good. The default mic gain is set at 50 and is low, I get excellent audio reports on SSB and FM with the mic gain set at 85 and no audio compression. The radio is lacking ruggedness and cold weather durability as -12c is the minimum recommend operating temperature. Canadian winters are much colder than -12c. The radio could use a direct digital interface, I would like to see a USB or Firewire connection for digital modes. Icom included an RTTY decoder, perhaps in the next model a PSK31 decoder and a CW reader? Overall I rate this radio on a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being perfect, the Icom 7000 is a 6 out of 10.
