I received my initial Foundation licence, VK2FBEP in October 2015 and my Standard in March 2016.

One of the main reasons I decided to get my licence was because of my late father Leslie. During WWII he was the radio operator on one of the U.S. Army Small Ships, the M.V. Norab (S206), a ship with its own history before the war.

See https://www.facebook.com/USArmySmallShipsAssociationInc for some info.

There was something else... The Neal Stephenson novel, Seveneves, which contains an interesting sequence where CW is used to communicate to the ISS, a key character in the novel. This prompted me to do the necessary research to get into the hobby.

The Norab was a hospital ship and it mainly went from Cairns to New Guinea, taking supplies and bringing back wounded. Due to the risk of taking fire, they were usually running radio silent, so my dad didn't have a job for a lot of the time. He never got his licence after he returned, although he threatened to many times. He did teach me a bit of morse code and so now I am starting to put some effort into learning the rest.

Learning all about radio as fast as I can. My setup is an Icom ic-706MkII with an MFJ tuner and a ZeroFive 10-40 Groundplane antenna I bought from the local recycle station scrap metal section for $50, pictured above.  It was complete with unun and base pole. It has become my main antenna but I also have a homemade G5RV which I predominantly use for 80m. I also recently got a Digi-Interface so that I can explore the digital side of things which ties in with my long experience with computers. Mostly on JT65 and WSPR. I also have a DV4mini which allows me to connect into D-Star with an IC-92AD, usually on Ref003C.

My background is as a Stress Management Consultant and Hypnotherapist working for over thirty years in that area. At the same time I am also a photomedia artist working on photographic/video installations and more recently entering the growing area of Projection art. I had work included in the DG2016 festival in Alys Beach Florida, May 2016 and have another work being projected at the Wagga Wagga Nightlights Projection Festival in late September/October 2016.
