December, 2017 - I've just completed building a Hexbeam which has been up and running since Boxing Day. I will be updating this page shortly with photographs and details.

Hello and thanks for visiting my page and for our QSO - I'm assuming that we've just had one hence your visit to my page smiley I have a recent contacts page on my website if you're interested in viewing my recent contacts.

About Me

Jonathan VK6PTUI've been an amateur radio operator since I was 17 years of age in the early 1980's but have been inactive for many of those years. I am originally from Sydney, New South Wales on the East coast of Australia and my previous callsigns were VK2PTU, VK5HJC and VK6JON. I also currently have a British callsign M0HSK.

In May, 2016 I relocated to Tasmania (VK7) and live in a house in the city of Burnie on the North West coast of Tasmania. I operate mainly from the portable and mobile but have started to set up a station at the new home QTH. I always aim to operate from good locations which either have good elevation or are near the saltwater.

I also operate the VK7JON.COM website which I update from time to time with information on my mobile and portable activities. The site has a contact page and shows my recent contacts so please don't hesitate to stop by and say 'hi'.

I develop websites and online databases for a living and enjoy the flexibility of working from home. smiley

My Working Conditions

  • Transceiver - I use a Yaesu FT857D transceiver due to its excellent size and portability.
  • Antenna - I use an Outbacker Perth tapped multi-band vertical antenna which is mounted on a nudge bar on the front of my motor vehicle. I have used this antenna for over 5 years now and it provides exceptional performance. It enables me to operate on 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 30 and 40 metres and is easily adjusted using its wander lead.

  • Transceiver - I use a Yaesu FT857D transceiver due to its excellent size and portability.
  • Battery - SLA 9Ah, Deep Cycle Gel 65Ah and Lithium-ion Polymer 14.8v 5000mAh.
  • Antennas - Buddipole portable antenna system and SOTABeams linked dipole for 20, 30, 40 and 80 metres supported by a 7 metre fishing pole.

I have only recently started to assemble a home station so it is somewhat of a work in progress. wink We are spoilt with a good location on a hill with about 60 metres elevation and overlook Bass Strait. I've recently started operating from here and the initial results have been good.

I can easily work long distance DX to Europe, the UK, USA etc. from here using this basic setup with a maximum of 100 watts power output.

  • Transceiver - Icom IC-7300.
  • Antenna - Homemade Delta loop antenna - 43 metres long with 4:1 balun for 40, 20 and 10 metres.
Mobile Operation from Car
  • Yaesu FT857D transceiver - usually using 50 watts output.
  • Outbacker Perth tapped multi band vertical antenna mounted on a nudge bar on the front of my motor vehicle.
Portable Operation
  • Yaesu FT857D transceiver.
  • Buddipole portable antenna.

The Buddipole is a modular antenna system which can be set up as either a vertical or a dipole and it fits into a travel bag. This suits my gypsy lifestyle since I can transport it easily to locations where I'm operating from and I've had excellent results with it working many DX contacts. I've even found myself in some pileups on 10 and 20 meters which is unexpected when operating portable.

These two photographs show the Buddipole set up as a horizontal dipole on 10 metres and a vertical on 20 metres.

UK Meetup With Real HF Mobile Group - November, 2012

I've spoken with Dave G4AKC and various members of his Real HF Mobile group on a number of occasions on 20 meters and always marvel at their pedestrian mobile and other setups. I was fortunate enough to meet and stay with Dave at his home in Blackpool for several nights in November, 2012 whilst visiting the UK.

This photograph shows Dave on the Blackpool Promenade which is the location where he operates mostly and gets the best results from.

You can find out more about this visit by visiting this page of my website.

You Tube Videos From DX Stations I've Worked

Whilst searching on Google recently, I found the following two videos taken by Sergey UR3CTB in the Ukraine, featuring two of our QSOswhilst operating from my motor vehicle in QSOs on 10 metres:-

  • The first video is fromJune, 2013.
  • The second video was taken on Christmas Day 2013.
