Bob has been a Ham since 1967, first licensed as KG6AQZ on the Island of Guam while on a 2 year assignment for IBM. His first station was a Swan 350 and a homebrew inverted "V".
While there he was afforded the privilage of membership in the USAF 27th Comm Squadron radio club, operating as KG6ALY on the club station Collins KWM-2A, 30S-1, and 3el beam at 55ft. Many contests, QSOs and Phone Patches helped pass the idle time.
In 1968 Bob returned to the Seattle area and changed his call to WA7JJR and 2 meter mobile became the most used mode for several years. Moving to Plano, Tx in 1976 resulted in another call change to WB5UIJ and an upgrade to Advanced class. In 1978 he was transferred to the Atlanta area (Roswell) and changed his call to KD4AO. 10 Meter QRP was popular then along with continued interest in 2 Meters repeaters and some HF DX. In 1981 another transfer brought Bob to Boca Raton, Fl. where he started the IBM Radio Club with a few others and eventually they got the WB4QNX repeater on 145.29.
Bob retired from IBM Boca Raton, Fl. in 1992 and moved to Punta Gorda, Fl., he has been mostly inactive except for short periods of HF portable. The rig is now a Yeasu FT897D and the antenna a Super Antenna mounted on a dock piling. He is also a frequent listener on 2 meters and 440.
Bob has been very active in BPOElks Lodge 2606 and is a Past Exalted Ruler, and past Lodge Secretary. Bob recently changed his call to W4PER and added an Amatuer Radio tag to the car. If you see him, he is always up for an eyeball QSO.
