Since my first name is somewhat unusual, I often go by "Doc" when on the air, particularly when using CW.

My XYL is Holly, N0QJM. Our son Nolan is N0LAN.

I was originally licensed as a Novice, WN7JUH, back in 1968 while growing up in Oregon. I later upgraded to Advanced Class and my call changed to WA7JUH. I upgraded again in the early 70s to Extra Class, then became W7XU in the mid-70s under a program the FCC had at the time that allowed Extra Class licensees to choose a 1X2 callsign.

While I enjoy operating on the MF/HF bands, I'm particularly interested in weak signal VHF+ operation. My favorite bands are 160m, 30m, 6m and 10 GHz. My favorite mode is CW, although I also enjoy phone operation, particularly during contests and on DXpeditions. I also have a long time interest in RTTY, having first become active on that mode in the early 1970s, when I started out with a Model 15 Teletype and a surplus CV-89A TU.

I occasionally get on 2m EME with a kW and 4 X 18XXX M2 antennas.

I have been on a number of DXpeditions that were primarily focused on 6 meters, including trips to 8R, 9G, C5, CE0Y, CY9, FJ, FY, J3, TZ and VP2V.  I have also operated from KH6 and KL7 and spent a year as a radio operator/technician at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station (KC4AAA).

In 2015, Marshall (K5QE), Holly (N0QJM) and I operated 2m EME and HF from VP8 (Falkland Islands). Then, in 2016, I was fortunate enough to be part of two mainstream HF DXpeditions: VP8STI and VP8SGI (South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia Island), followed by VK0EK (Heard Island).

Operating highlights over the years include working:

  • My XYL and son (who was licensed but only 9 years old at the time) on 6m SSB from Ghana while they were back home in South Dakota
  • California (N6RMJ) on 432 SSB via meteor scatter from South Dakota (2,040 km)
  • My XYL and son on 30m RTTY from Heard Island
  • Rhode Island on 2m SSB meteor scatter for my 48th state on 2 without the use of EME
  • A number of 6m DX QSOs, including FY to VK8 and VK9C, 8R to VQ9 and VK9C, CE0Y to VU (at one point running only about 1 W at my end and 125 milliwatts at the VU station), and 9G to JA

I am a charter life member of the Central States VHF Society and a life member of the ARRL.

Other interests include bicycling, hiking, alpine skiing and shooting. I have done some long distance biycle touring over the years (including Oregon to Newfoundland, and trips in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and SE Asia) and I have hiked the 2,650 mile long Pacific Crest Trail, completing that in September 2016.

The photo of me at the top of the page was taken on South Georgia Island. The other photo is one I took of an Adelie penguin on Thule Island, in the South Sandwich Islands.
