W9BGX, the Northwestern University Amateur Radio Society, has a multi-decade record of involvement by students and faculty. The image below is our #33 in the World 5BDXCC Award, dating to 1970.





Current HF equipment at W9BGX includes a Kenwood TS-590SG transceiver driving an Alpha 8410 linear amplifier:




An AirSpy R2 SDR fed off the TS-590SG provides panoramic spectral display.  The primary HF antenna is a Cushcraft X7 mounted on a 15m Rohn 45G tower above the north tower of Northwestern's Technological Institute building, which houses the University's engineering school.  The X7 is at a total height of approximately 45m above local ground.  Excellent propagation to Africa, Europe, and over the North Pole is possible in part due to proximity to Lake Michigan, which is located less than 400m to the east. In the main photo, the X7 is pointed toward Europe at 45˚.
