As a youngster, my dad helped me put together several kits including a Sears Seek (early transistor) radio and Heathkit HR-10 receiver and DX-60A transmitter.  Nearby hams (from the next town 10 miles away) helped me get some dipoles up and in 1966, just before entering high school, I was licensed as a novice (WN5QIN).  That made me the only ham in my small town (Zwolle, LA).  I had a great time over the next several years, aided by a Drake TR4 that I got for Christmas one year.

However, after college came medical school, residency and a very busy, full career as a heart surgeon. With rare exception, I was inactive radio-wise for decades.  In retirement, the interest reawakened and I upgraded to Extra from the Advanced that I’d held for years.  When that happened last year it naturally led to an Elecraft KX-3 with some dipoles and a long wire in the attic.

MUCH has changed since I was last active, so these days I’m exploring the new (to me) digital modes including PSK-31, JT-65, SSTV, etc.  With HRD and a Signalink USB, the KX3 does these things beautifully.  I am continually amazed at the places I can work with 5 W and a nothing special antenna.

Despite the changes in this great hobby over the intervening years, it’s nice to find that hams themselves remain the same courteous, helpful, and committed “professionals” that helped me get started.  Ham radio--still fun after all these years!
