Howdy! Thanks for checking in......

I am 45 years old, born and raised in upstate NY. I moved to Wyoming in 1995 and never looked back. Although I do miss the trees back east......  I'm married to a wonderful and patient lady (Trish) who puts up with my many hobbies and quirks. We have two children, a boy (11)  and a girl (15). We boast three Siamese cats, a new beagle puppy, and some backyard hens.

We live in the city limits on a fairly small single-family lot, so not much room for a good antenna. I am using a homemade wire loop hung under the eves of our ranch-style home, only about 15 feet off the ground. No amp, just 100 watts out of my Icom 718. Pretty simple.... but it seems to work ok.  I don't have experience with any other antennas to compare my horizontal loop to, but so far I have managed to work South Africa, South Shetland Island, Austrailia, New Zealand, and Japan on good days. My farthest contact (FT8) so far is just under 10,000 miles (South Africa). I'm really having a lot of fun with FT8 because I don't have the most powerful setup for voice/SSB.  Farthest I've managed with voice/SSB is Italy.

I work for the City of Casper, WY as the City Planner, as well as the manager of the building department and the zoning/code enforcement department. As you can probably guess, I'm not the most popular guy around here!  Got my education at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse NY.  I gained my appreciation for radio in the US Army Signal Corps in Augusta Georgia (Fort Gordon) where I was trained as a radio operator (31C MOS).  That was about 20-plus years ago. Although I enjoyed it at the time, my interest in amateur radio as a hobby is fairly recent.   I recently (9/17) upgraded to General, so I'm pretty green.  I don't mind constructive advice, and appreciate the people who have reached out to help me....., or just to say "hi"......thank you!

When Im not playing radio these days (most of my free time), I can be found hunting, enjoying the great Wyoming outdoors, making beer, or tinkering in the garage.  I'm very interested in obtaining some equipment and heading to some mountain tops to see what kind of difference a little elevation makes.  Not sure about SOTA, or QRP, but will probably start with a basic rig and simple homebuilt antenna and see where it goes from there.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my bio.  I recently got QSL cards printed, but I'm having so much fun on the radio that it is hard to break away to complete the QSL's......but it will be a long winter, and I'll get to it eventually!  I'm really looking forward to receiving paper QSL cards, and will reciprocate.  I do LOTW, QRZ-logbook, and eQSL now.   Most of the time I upload about 2 times a week.....  It seems to be a controversial topic, but just to put it out there......I am pretty liberal about logging contacts.  If (on digital modes) I receive a callsign, location, and a signal report, then I log it. I always try to RRR and 73 because it is courteous......but if for some reason it doesn't happen, I still log it.  I figure that my log is my record so I can maintain it how I want.  I'm not super concerned if the QSO isn't confirmed on the other end......that is their perogative.  I don't bother people to confirm QSO's.

73 and God Bless!
