I was introduced to amateur radio as a six year old by my late uncle Calolm McGregor ZS1FX (circa 1962) and will be remembered by old-timers as he stuttered badly. In the 70's and mid 80's I became an ardent SWL but at that time did not want to become a radio amateur.

Paul Johnson ZS1S re-intruduced me to amateur radio and I passed the RAE exams in October 2010. A yachting friend, Tom Ambrose ZS1TA, was also instrumental in me becoming a radio amateur.. When Tom did international yacht deliveries he used HF APRS for position reporting and mailed his blog using WinLink.

I became operational on HF radio in February 2011, enjoying the wide variety within amateur radio, and particularly HF.

I currently use an Icom IC-726, Kenwood TK-80, and for mobile use an Icom IC-706 MkIIG. For antennas at my QTH in Durbanville, Cape Town, I use a Web FST-200 wide band 2.5 - 30 MHz antenna and an 80m horizontal loop. When nomiadic I use a long wire or the FST-200 or dipole.

I am particularly interested in emergency communications, support of community events, and digital modes.

ZS1OK was previously used by Tommy Turner who is now silent key.
