my shack

This is my little confortable ham shack!

QSL cards via bureau or eQSL are welcome.

In the last period I'm also beginning digital mode communications via my Yaesu FT 450, the MicroHam USB Interface III and my new laptop installed with OpenSuse 13.2.

New MFJ 1792 antenna installed in December 2015. It covers 40 and 80 meters bands. Here you are some picture of it! Unfortunately this antenna has been removed because of its extremely difficulty to resist at strong wind condition...

I have temporarily substituted it with a fish pole antenna adapted for 20m band. In addition I have a dipole inverted V for 40m and a very clever solution for small spaces which is the half dipole of IW2EN called Firewire 2.0, it covers from 10 to 80 with some tuning...

Ciao, I'm a novice HAM.

I obtained my Italian radio amateur licence at the end of of 2012. I like to share this hobby with my friends of the Italian Radio Amateur Association (ARI) in Roma. I'm part of a small HF group that is growing time by time, we organize participation to contests all together and share ideas and experiences about radio operations and antennas. It is a very good way to learn from experienced people, not only from the text books.

I own the Yaesu FT 817 ND, an MJF-949E tuner and I have installed a Firewire 2.0 antenna (wire antenna with balun) on the top of my building. The antenna was positioned as a slooper and I need 50mt. of coax to reach the roof. It is quite difficult to do QSOs with 5 WATTS but of course I will experiment new antenna set-ups in the future to gain some more db. For the moment my mainly activity is SWL, I need to practice... My QTH is 1 Km. from the sea, in Ostia Lido a suburb of the city of Roma, I have to admit that QRM here is not so strong even if in the last period on 40M there is something strange on the air...

The 6th of April 2014 I did a small modification to the Firewire 2.0 antenna, following the suggestions of my HAM friend Giovanni. The wire has been substituted and is now long 10 mt. (before this mod it was long 7 mt. but the first half was made with a coax RG58) and the position of the antenna is now an inverted L instead of a slooper. The balun starts from about 2 mt. from the ground and then there are about three and half meters of wire vertically and about five and half meters horizontally. The horizontal part of the antenna is height about 6 meters from the ground. There is also a conterpoise wire of a random lenght starting from the baloon (about 3 meters). The first good news is that it works! I can say that it is better than before.

In the beginning of 2015 I had the opportunity to buy an used Yaesu FT-450 and now I'm enjoying practicing with this new radio! I like to work in QRP therefore I have immediately set this radio to 5W RFPOWER but I will for sure test all the 100W of this nice radio!

Today the 24th of October 2016 I have a new radio coming from Claudio IZ0CVN, the Yaesu Musen FT-7!

Have a nice day!

Buon divertimento a tutti.
