Burning Man - Black Rock City, NV: host of 70,000+ people with self expression in global ART Displays within the harsh Nevada Desert. The environment features daily temperature swings 100+ to low 40's and frequent dust / sand storms. This event is unplugged from society - no cellphone, WiFi, or other municipal services (no electricity, water, sewer). The modern day infrastructure does not exist.

Amateur Radio and satellite phone service are the only communication sources.

This expedition is a true demonstration of emegency communication capability.

James (ki5dq) will spend 7+ days in Black Rock City, assisting people as needed as an EMT-Medic. Plus providing vital link communications within the area.

The Black Rock City special event station will be powered by generator. Station hours will mainly be primarily 09/01 - 09/04/2017 day & evening. This will be a single band operation, depending on propagation.

During the week 08/27 - 08/31, operation will be random, due to my medical responsibilities and other activities.

The planned frequencies are: 14.265, 7.265mhz.  If you are on the Playa: 146.520mhz.

The harsh dust / sand storms will cease HF station operations.

Good Luck and hope to hear from you!

During '2018 - more expeditions.

Good Luck and hope to hear from you!

... I am leaving the below post.  Amateur Radio really stood out during during that event.  James

2015/09/11 Update:

Thanks to everyones participation and patience of this rare QSO.  The dust / sand storms were frequent, along with much medical care provided.  Sorry, but I could not work as much ham HF radio time as desired - the medical care was more important of within the 70,000+ people.BRC QRV-12 EMT-Medic

Typical medical time consisted of me toting 2 - 2-way radios simultanouly.  Air-tight eyewear was mandotory, nearly 80% outside time, along with protective respiratory gear, much of the time .
