Whiskey Three Papa or Whiskey Three Pithole special event station celebrating the sesquicentennial, (150th Anniversary),of the great fire in 1866 in Pithole, Pennsylvania. We, The Fort Venango Mike and Key Club, W3ZIC, are operating along Pithole Creek in the ghost town of Pithole City. Pithole was the site of one of the largest land rushes in history. Pithole was planned and laid out in May 1865 with 500 lots and some 22 streets. The lots were only 33 feet wide. Constructions was swift utilizing a thousand carpenters. Most building were dangerously flimsy and poorly constructed in record time. Two story buildings were planned built and occupied in less than a weeks time. People from all over stampeded to Pithole during the oil boom just after the discovery of oil by Drake only a few miles away. During its peak , Pithole City had a population of over 15,000 people, 50 or more hotels, the third largest post office in Pennsylvania (only larger were Philadelphia and Pittsburgh). Two banks, a fire department and opera house. The city disappeared due to the decline in oil production and the many fires that ravaged the city in the “Valley that Changed the World”.
