Republika y’u Burundi:
- Burundi, officially the “Republic of Burundi” (Kirundi: Republika y'u Burundi; French: République du Burundi), is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Its capital is Bujumbura. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.
- The Twa, Tutsi, and Hutu peoples have occupied Burundi since the country's formation five centuries ago. Burundi was ruled as a kingdom by the Tutsi for over two hundred years. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Germany and Belgium occupied the region, and Burundi and Rwanda became an European colony known as Ruanda-Urundi. Presently, Burundi is governed as a presidential representative democratic republic.
Burundi Ham Story:
- After its defeat in World War I, Germany handed control of a section of the former German East Africa to Belgium. On October 20, 1924, this land, which consisted of modern-day Rwanda and Burundi, became a Belgian League of Nations mandate territory, in practical terms part of the Belgian colonial empire, known as Ruanda-Urundi connected to Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire).
- After 1945, the “Ham Prefix” allowed to use was OQ5 for Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) and OQ0 for Ruanda-Urundi province. This three states was called “Belgian Congo”.
- On 30 June 1960 Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) became an independent country and the new ham prefix is 9Q. For the Ruanda-Urundi province, the prefix used was 9U between 01 July 1960 to 30 June 1962 and count as a “Deleted country” for this two years. On 01 July 1962 Ruanda-Urundi became independent from Belgian colony as two new countries, Rwanda with prefix 9X and Burundi with prefix 9U.
