Fabricating, welding and improving antennas is what I've been doing lately. I spend most of my operating time on SSB between 6m-80m. I enjoy working ortable in remote areas of the south west, chasing DX and operating QRP while camping. When commuting on the road, I can usually be found on local repeaters as well as rag chewing on my favorite remote system, the "CACTUS-INTERTIE SYSTEM." For HF DXing, my favorite bands are the WARC bands. I also favor 6m USB over any other frequency above 50 mHz.
D-STAR or any digital mode doesn't excite me at all. I use digital commerical radios at work (Technisonic TDFM 7000/NV) on a daily basis and the audio is really lousy. You'd think a $24,000 multi-band, FM, aviation digital/analog radio would be a quality transiever. Think again. I have no interest with Echolink or IRLP either. I just don't find excitement with using the internet to bridge RF into a transiever. I have no "axe to grind" with the IRLP fraternity. I recognize that there are times when IRLP operation can be invaluable. Echolink however, is NOT amateur radio. With Echolink, why bother to get a license in the first place? Without RF, it's just another AOL internet chatroom.
I spend some time using Morse code (CW), aka: the "original digital mode." I prefer a straight key over paddles. The BEGALI "Camelback" straight key is one of my personal favorites that I highly recommend. Another excelent straight key is the "Blade" by BEGALI. Rag-chewing, chasing DX, Contesting, HF-portable, QRP, CW, antenna experimenting, and QSLing are the best things with amateur radio.
On occassion, I'm afforded the opportunity to go Aeronautical Mobile (/AM) while at work. I enjoy being an "appliance operator," flying. I've had some interesting qso's on the air, while flying.
I collect themed full-sheet stamps from all over the world. The stamp themes include amateur radio, military communications, WW II radio, Marconi commemoratives, communication satelites, Morse code, telegraph, historical inventors that have contributed to radio, as well as commercial broadcasting stamps and cold war propaganda radio to name just a few. I'm a firearms enthusiast who collects and shoots all types of firearms. I have both modern and "classic" types of guns. Many firearms that I have are from the WW II era. I love shooting the classic lever action rifles from Winchester and Marlin Firearms Co and especially love my SAA revolvers from Colt and USFA. God's gift to gun owner's is the Colt 1911 in .45ACP, with the 10mm getting a close "second place." I'm an avid hunter who enjoys big game, small game, upland game and predator hunting. Stream fishing in the Sierras, camping with the family, 4-wheel drive exploring in REMOTE areas and shooting guns are what suits me for the time being. I'm an avid "REMOTE-outdoors" enthusiast! I have life memberships with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the North American Hunting Club (NAHC).
I'm active with the following organizations: North American QRP CW Club #3937, FISTS CW Club #14275, QRP Amateur Radio Club International #13741, Straight Key Century Club #5106, 10-10 International #75057, International DX Association #4337, & the ARRL. I'm currently a designated VE with my local ARC, via ARRL, GLAARG and the W5YI group.
I reciprocate QSL cards 100%. Please NO e-QSL or LoTW. I prefer the old fashioned paper QSLSs. Don't be cheap! "-Paper QSLs, one of the last remaining original traditions we have in this great hobby.
