Click for more detail... The city of Funchal, capital of the Island of Madeira, will celebrate its centennial as city in August 2008. Funchal was the first city to be designated as such, within the vast dominiumof the Portuguese Discoveries. This deignation complied with its development as a consequence of the thriving cultivation of sugar as well as the presence of many foreigners living on the island, who were involved in commerce. Funchal had therefore been acknowledge as being an important trading centre in the North Atlantic, end the headquarters of a large Bishop's Diocese that was spiritually responsabile for the new territories on shores of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
