AZORES ISLANDS, NORTH ATLANTIC OUTPOST
www.vistazores.com

Finally snow has fallen in the Far North and it's time for the snowbirds to depart for warmer climates. This time around, the team of OH2BE, OH2BH, OH2PM, OH8NC and OH8NJ will join forces with the locals CU2CE and CU2DX and the Azores to hit the airwaves with a variety of callsigns such as CR2A and CR2X in contests, and CU2KG & CU2KH otherwise.

The activity will start on February 12 and run until March 3 including the ARRL DX Contest, both CW & SSB, and the CQ 160M SSB Contest. CR2A/CR2X QSL manager is OH2BH.

CR2X on the air in the CQ WW SSB Contest-2013 Last year's winner of the European title in CQ WW CW, Kim OH6KZP returned to Sao Miguel for the CQWW SSB. Supported by the CU2ARA team and others the station was fine-tuned for his SOAB HP entry - now on the air.

The 10.7-cm solar flux is at the value of 160, which is the highest in CQ WW SSB since 2003.

This has brought lots of activity on 10M. We hope that the excited feelings from the Azores are conveyed to you trough the signals from CR2X.

QSL via OH2BH Adding to the success of the previous CU2A location, a lot of effort has been put into building a CR2X radio site in Ribeira Grande, the second largest city in the Azores, located on the north coast of Sao Miguel Island. The new CR2X also pushed the Azores team to new heights, making their services available to their immediate community.

On October 4, 2008 Mr. Ricardo José Moniz da Silva, the Mayor of the City of Ribeira Grande, paid a visit to the new location and made the very first radio contact at CR2A/CR2X/CQ8X. He spoke with Mr. Avelino Bettencourtt, CU2DE, another Azores operator in the remote village of Ribeira Quente.

The significance of this radio contact was that Mr Bettencourtt's amateur radio station offered the only means of communication from his village when the area was hit by heavy rains, causing a landfall and destroying many houses in his part of the island and isolating the entire area from the rest of the island.

The CR2X site is fully set up for operation in any emergency situation, whether inter-island or over the whole of Azores Islands.

The CR2X radio location is manned by the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium of Radio Arcala and it is activated frequently in conjunction with Amateur Radio special events and radio competitions.

The group behind the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium consists of:

Fernando Tavares, CU2BV, Former Finnish Honorary Consul to the Azores; Jose Melo, CU2CE and Francisco Gil, CU2DX and from Finland, Martti Laine, OH2BH/CU2KG, Toni Linden, OH2UA/CU2KI and Juha Hulkko, OH8NC/CU2KH.

The CR2X is part of the Radio Arcala station network.

Ponta Delgaga, May.21.2013

*CR2X - AZORES ACTIVE IN WPX CW CONTEST*

Associação Radioamadores dos Açores, A.R.A. (CU2ARA) heartily welcomes the Slovak Contest Group (OM8A), a prominent European contest team, to visit the Azores and run the WPX CW Contest as a Multi-Single entry from the Island of San Miguel (EU-003) www.visitazores.com .
The team consists of Tibi, OM3RM; Rasto, OM3BH and Julius, OM7JG and they will use the CR2X station. Outside of the contest you may hear them operating CT8/their own callsign. www.om8a.org
Team leader Tibi, OM3RM of OM8A fame, noted for many impressive WPX scores from Madeira (CQ3A & CR3A), is also President of OM Power, a well-known European maker of amplifiers now entering the US market. Featuring a rugged design, the amplifiers come with highly advanced technology, including remote operating features with direct IP access.
The Azores-Finland Friendship Society and Radio Arcala will be hosting the visitors under the expert guidance of Jose, CU2CE and Martti, CU2KG (OH2BH). As Martti will be staying on the island for the next few weeks, you may hear him operating occasionally as CU2KG.
