According to genoese maps of the 14th century, the Azores were discovered between 1317 and 1339 by portuguese sailors and some genoese sailors who were in the service of Portugal. However, the great historian Damião Peres attributes the discovery of the archipelago to Diogo de Silves, a portuguese navigator, in the year 1427!!! The Azores have played an important part in Portugal´s history. They participated in the conquest and defense of portuguese strongholds in north africa they were a stopover for ships coming from India; they supported the expeditions for the exploration of the americas, and, during the spanish domination of Portugal from 1580 to 1640 they were a bulwark of patriotic resistance. After the 1974 revolution, the constitution of 1976 assured the Azores a statute of autonomy with its own legislative assembly and government. Initially named the island of Jesus Christ, it was the third (Terceira) island to be discovered, Terceira is the most populate island of the central group of the archipelago. It covers an area of 382 square kilometres, just like the other islands it has a mild temperate climate, with a small temperature range, varying between 13ºc (55ºf) in the winter and 26ºc (79ºf) in the summer!!! The water temperature is equally stable, varying between 17ºC and 24ºC (63ºF and 75ºF).
